Guest guest
Dr Mc I'm due to have my third child in the next two weeks. Vit K is mandatary at birth in New York state and I was wondering if there is any advantage to asking for oral vitamin K over a vitamin K injection. Thanks Jess
Guest guest
> My experience-- With both of my sons, I declined everything at birth (eye oinment, vit K, vaccinations). I delivered at a Los Angeles hospital with a midwife attending. Vaginal births, unmedicated. I did elect to have vitamin K oral, about a week after birth for my oldest son at the pediatrician's office. I didn't bother with this with my second son. Both were jaundiced. Their pediatrician decided not to treat the jaudice, other than having me place them near a window in the sunlight. Both of my sons had/have language problems and are mildly on the spectrum. I was quite worried about the vitamin k the first time, it didn't seem like much of an issue the second time. (Maybe I would have handled the jaundice issue differently--of, course, I can second guess absolutely everything.) My pediatrician did recommend the oral Vit K over the injection, based on some European research (I think--this was 7 years ago) showing small chance of developing some disease with intramuscular vs oral vitamin k. You might check Mothering Magazine website for artcles from back issues, they had good references on Vitamin K research. From what I remember, extra Vit K could be really crucial if your baby has a specific problem, but not really necessary generally. Problem is, you don't know if your baby is going to be one that really needs it. Good luck making your decision. > Dr Mc > > I'm due to have my third child in the next two weeks.
