I'm not an expert - I've gone through so many of these tests for the past 7

years. Don't worry about it and get the first urine possible. The test will be

fine.

Urine sample/metabolic test from Great Smokies

We need to get a " first morning " urine sample from for the metabolic

test from Great smokies. Since I have to change his diet a bit I wanted to do a

trial run. He is not potty trained so goes all night in his diaper. I have him

his drink this am and put him on a chair w/ a cup in front...and waited...and

waited at least 20 min. So the urine I will get will not be first morning. How

might this effect the test? Is there another way?

Some moms have had success taping a plastic baggy around the penis and

making a hole in the diaper, pulling the baggy out so the urine collecting

can be seen, removing it when you get enough. I suppose this would all have

to be adequately covered so he can't pull it off. (The girls are really

challenging, and we just have to do the best we can!) Dr. JM

Just a thought, but I noticed my son always urinated while playing in

the bath tub. I started letting him urinate into a little cup in the

bath, then graduated to a test cup and it worked pretty good...Kim

What we do is put a glass bowl inside the toilet and then use cling

film from all around the rim of the toilet down to the edge of the

glass bowel. This way with the seat down, the toilet looks the same

to the kids and the urine all goes into the bowl !!
