Hi All,

Anyone have any suggestions for herbs which tone the gastric-oesophageal

sphincter. I have a patient who, after a scope, was diagnosed with an

incompetent sphincter. Pt is concerned that because this is an anatomical

" defect " that she will never recover from the acid reflux symptoms

associated with this. So far Rx has allowed the pt to stop taking Nexium,

but I want to be sure that the cause of the problem is being remedies as

well.

Rx Fillipendula, Matricaria, Glycerrhiza, Agrimonia, and Scuttelaria. Plus

Slippery Elm pwd.

Cheers,

Marcia

Dear Marcia,

Small doses (5mls weekly) of Acorus calamus are supposed to tone the

sphincter. I tend to use 5mls archangelica per week, plus the

excellent herbs you've already suggested. Valarian can be helpful if

stress is a big component, plus Althea rad and slippery Elm at night

before bedtime.

I imagine she's already doing sensible things to reduce reflux, like

raising the head of her bed, not bending over to pick things up, keeping

off caffeine including chocolate, avoiding acidic food eg citrus,

tomatoes etc, wearing loosish clothing around the waist.

Best wishes

Bitter herbs such as Artemisia abs or Gentiana help improve the tone of the

sphincter and improve control and coordination of the digestion in general -

I've found them to be ok even in patients with stomach pain or acid reflux.
