No, none of our kids can get too much magnesium or too much Vitamin C.

Bowels dictate; when loose stools happen, back off. Dr. JM

Dr. JM,

My 19 year old son has been constipated for about 4 years. I tried high

vitamin C (about 15,000 mg/day didn't help). I did try increasing his

magnesium,

but maybe I didn't use the right kind. Two questions-- First, to loosen

stools, if you increase the magnesium, should you also increase the calcium, to

maintain a balance? (for example, is it ok to take 1000mg magnesium, and only

400 mg calcium?). Second, is mag glycinate the best for constipation (I think I

used citrate last time I tried)?

Thank You, a H.

Citrated forms are usually more absorbable and act more on the bowels in my

experience. I personally prefer a form I get from Physiologics called

Magnesium Chelate, and give it until bowels are normal while still giving

the usual daily amount of calcium needed, about 1000-1500mg per day in our

kids. Dr. JM
