Guest guest
Dear Jim, Gosh! Did they sneak a tape worm in with the prednisone? You are the first person I ever knew who lost weight on it! I imagine losing so much weight was as awful as gaining though. Funny how the women gained and the guy lost weight. Where's the justice in life? (smile) Love,
Guest guest
YES! That's exactly what would happen to me! Isn't that just horrible?? I've been quiet through the prednisone conversation . . . because I have nothing good to say about it. I've been off it almost 2 months now and haven't lost ANY of the 15 lbs I gained . . . and we can't exercise to help it along either, thank you EN! grrrrr! Going to my UCONN doc Thursday, gonna show her all my new prizes! Again, grrrr! Have a great night, everyone! Guest guest
hi jim, jo and others, if i can jump in to help for a minute. methotrexate sometimes referred to as " mtx " is a low dose chemo. it is used as immunotherapy. it has other uses such as for ra. i have been on it for 1 1/2 years. i started with pills once a week then went to self injections. i have crohns disease, so the absorption of the pill is an issue with me...probably not getting the full dose. i started on 15mg/week but now down to 10mg/wk because i also am on remicade infusions. mtx typically for our applications can go as high as 25mg/week. you can expect to get quite tired the next day, about a 24 hour period, the more you take, the worse that sx. also, mouth sores can be an issue and neasea. i got severe fatigue and also the mouth sores on 15mg. this tends to die down after your body gets used to it. it takes about 6 weeks for the effect to kick in. after that the sx's tend to settle down. if you can hang on that long, life does get better. i always tell people if the dose makes the sx's too unbearable, ask the doc about a reduced dose and after 6 to 8 weeks slightly up the dose. i think that would have worked better for me, i went the other way, but sometimes you just don't know. i personally think a hit of 15mg or more in the beginning is a pretty big hit all at once. this stuff is wicked, so you got to watch it. do keep it away from children and they even say for me, when i fill my syringe, some of this gets airborne, for some people, this can adversly effect them, especially if they have any kind of liver problems. some pharmacys pre-fill syringes for this reason i have heard. i just do this in a room with no one else around (i shoot-up in secret....lol). you can expect to get monthly to every 3 months, depending on your doc, liver enzime blood tests. these tests aren't cheap either. mtx has been around a long time so it is generic and relatively cheap. the blood tests run over $100. e-mail me if you have any other questions. > Hi Jackie and Jim.... > > I just wanted to thank Jim for mentioning the medication, Methotrexate. I know nothing about it, but I will ask my doctor about it next Monday when I see him. > > Thanks again, Jim.... > > Jo > >
Guest guest
hi all you pred bashers... :-) if you want a real trip, try 120mg pred. was on it for months for my pg. i gained 30 pounds. this was over 2 years ago. i have just now finally lost all but about 5 pounds of that. i had been on pred before and it took me about a year to loose the weight. i think it is worse each successive time you go on it, at least that is my experience. i could write a book on the list of other sx's i had due to this dose....stuff is wicked! couple of suggestions. much of this is water. try a dieretic (see your doc first on that). drink lots of water, believe it or not. the dieretic helped me loose the first 10 pounds almost immediately. i had such bad swelling in my pg leg the doc was afraid the scare would tear open. it helped both ways. good luck on your weight reduction program! jeff > YES!
