That's a good question. I hate Proventil. I don't think it works as good as albuterol. What do they expect us asthmatics to do? This kind of crap annoys me.

Are they going to completely do away with inhalers after December as I heard??? I pray this was misinformation....

Also, how in the world do you get Proventil to go in like Albuterol does? It does not spray hardly at all! It all ends up on my tongue!

If it ends up on your tongue then you are not properly doing the

medication. From what I was told, is that you exhale as much as you

possible can....hold it....spray into your mouth towards your throat and

inhale DEEPLY as you spray.

I cannot believe they are doing away with inhalers...probably you are

getting the new inhalers...and if you do not inhale the

medication....kind of like taking a big hit of it wanting the most you

can get...........................that is how the new inhalers work the

best. Exhale, hold, spray and at the same time inhale it all in. That is

what they taught me in the hospital.

really you need the medication in your lungs and not your

tongue.....really inhale as you spray...inhale deeply as you can.

I am bothered that you posted something like that without substantiating

evidence to back up what you say. I am one of lots of people here that

depend on their inhalers. Where did you hear that after December we

would not have our precious inhalers...please send info asap. please.

I NEVER posted anything about a FACT... I am bothered that you act

I do not think Proventil sprays as well as Albuterol, or maybe mine

is messed up since I cannot get it to spray to the back of my throat

no matter what I do. Even though Cindi told me what I laready know,

I spray it at the back of my throat and inhale deeply (like I didn't

already know that), but it still does not spray as well as the old

Albuterol inhalers. I KNOW how to use an in haler, but this new

Proventil one just does not work as well.

you are right about some inhalers like Albuterol will be phased out. They will be replace with an oxone friendly inhalers. So don't worry. I am sending a link that will explain what I am talking about. Asking a question here should not be a problem.

you need a spacer or some call them chambers. It is a small chamber about 6 inches long that has a mouth piece on one end and on the other end is space to put your inhaler in. The medications goes into the chamber and then you breathe the medication into your lungs. I love mine and would like to get another one for a spare.

Thank you Lou!!!! I was just asking a question, and i thought that

was what this group was for! I was not stating a fact at that point,

or trying to annoy anyone, so thanks for sending the information!

I will get a spacer to see if that will help with this new

Proventil. Thanks for anwering my question and helping me without

being " bothered " with me. :-)

Michele,

In Cindi's defense, I don't think she was being bothered by you, and

she was trying to be helpful. I don't use any of the inhalers

anymore. I have gone to a portable nebulizer and love it. Much

easier than inhalers. However, when I was using the inhalers I found

that using a chamber as Lou suggested really helped me get all the

medicine. Ask your asthma doc for one as the drug reps usually

provide them. He may have one he can give you for free, or you can

get them at your drugstore usually about $10. Very easy to use.

Also, the deadline for phasing out the old inhalers that use the old

style propellant is what is being phased out. Although your current

inhalers are probably ones using the new propellants already.

I am very

disappointed that they changed the albuterol one.

The new

albuterol cansister says ProAir on it. It is HALF the size of the old one and the taste bothers me.

It’s

costing me more than the larger one did.

Even though they say the new ones work just as well, we should have

been given the CHOICE to switch back to the old ones if we feel they

were working better.

I am still working off my old inhaler -

but it expires soon, so I will have to use my HFA.

I hope there are no problems.

By the way, I got it for free with the coupon card, there really was

no charge. All you need is a script. I will find the site, and post

again for anyone who may have missed it.

I think it was allowed to happen because drs really seem to think that

regular Albuterol inhalers and Proventil inhalers are the same and

therefore should be easily interchangeable. Asthmatics who have used

both know otherwise. I am on the other side of the equation in that I

have always had to use Proventil inhalers and could never tolerate

regular Albuterol ones. The drs always " humored " me by giving what I

asked for while explaining Proventil was Albuterol and there was no

difference at all. I know that is impossible because Albuterol

inhalers make me cough and feel shaky and make my heart race.

Proventil never did that. So whatever the difference is, the

propellant, or an ingredient or something IS different about them. I

feel for you guys that are being forced to change to a medicine that

you do not feel works as well for you, I know that I would hate to be

forced to switch from Proventil to Albuterol.

It began, as I've read, when Congress ruled that Chloro Fluoro Carbons

(CFCs) had to be removed from all products, asthma medications using

CFC propellants were included. Apparently, we asthmatics are partly to

blame for global warming when we take our split-second inhalations.

The pharmas came up with HFCs (I forget what that stands for). Once

the propellant compound was changed, it enabled the pharmas to cease

selling Albuterol as a generic drug, which caused the price to go up.

I tried to get people on this list to write their Congress members more

than a year ago about the absurdity of this, but nobody seemed

I guess I was diagnosed around the time that they were changing it. Had I known about this earlier, trust me, I would've written somebody. This affects the health of millions of people, and really it's a matter of life and death. For me, Albuterol worked instantly. No nasty taste. No double doses. Proventil feels like I can't get it in my lungs, and I do the exhale thing, etc. It doesn't work for me, period. I think if enough people complain, maybe they'll do something. Unfortunately though, it'll take a lot of people dying from asthma attacks before they do something.

It really annoys me how our lawmakers seemingly arbitrarily pass laws that affect us (mostly negatively) and we the people (who THEY WORK FOR and not the other way around) know nothing about. Not to get off topic, but I am a hobby soapmaker. There's been legislation that's been trying to pass to make ANYONE who makes " cosmetics " pay an annual $2000 fee! I signed the petition on that one because it makes me angry. I am tired of the government dictating to me what I should eat, how I should eat it, what medicine I can take, how I should take it, etc. The government's job is to protect its citizens from outside forces, not prevent the masses from pursuing happiness.

It's ok to get on a soapbox once in a while! I think it's worth

keeping in mind that this is exactly how much our lawmakers care

about us. Big Pharma gets to market high-priced " new " drugs with new

patents, legislators get to claim they're doing something for the

environment without actually having to irritate Big Oil or its

lobbyists, and members of the public who have health issues but no

lobbyists can just go suffocate.

you did not bother me.....you did panic me a little. I would not be

surprised if I missed some information about them doing away with

inhalers? Probably what you are thinking is the old albuterol inhalers.

I really hope that they are not doing away with all of them LOL!! What

would we all do? Really I was panicked...You did not bother me....the

fact that indeed inhalers might be taken off the market did a

lot......nothing surprises me anymore with the government. I am sorry if

you took it the wrong way...

I know.....maybe they can make a cherry flavored one?

Spacers are another option, but I have a hard time thinking of carrying

a spacer around with me along with the inhaler. I think the new

albuterols do not spray as hard. Maybe we can all get together and come

up with a trademark cherry flavored one. I had not really noticed too

bad a taste...probably because I do the flovent directly right after.

Does anyone here that uses the powdered inhaler notice the taste?

how big are the spacers? In relation like to the inhaler? I was thinking

now I am really confused. I have the new Proventil and it says albuterol

on it..I was thinking that it was the propellant they were changing, but

it still is abuterol? It is Proventil HFA...still is albuterol. They are

banning that as well? I am getting ready to get my year's worth of

prescritions renewed....I depend on albuterol..

I hope that they are not banning it.....

I notice a bit of a taste, but not enough to make me not use it. Also, when I use my inhaler I hold it in my right hand and put my left hand under it that way I can press harder on it and make it spray harder. I feel it works this way.

I haven't heard anything about Albuterol being banned. My old, Generic

brand of Albuterol ( brand) has now been substituted with

Pro-Air. It sprays differently--a weaker blast of medication, and it

takes a tad longer to work, but it seems to be doing the job. --marty

Thanks Madeline. Sometimes I can stick foot in mouth and send...I need

to sometimes not be so quick with the send button, and re-read what I

write. I do get misunderstood a lot, and I am do apologize for that. I

freaked out.

Also, when I first started doing inhalers years ago....too many doctors

just prescribed it with no explanation of even how to use one. No wonder

I would quit using them...none of it was even making my lungs.

Anyways...enough rambling.

ok....I wondered that too. I started not being able to buy the old CFC

here in Arizona last year. That is why I am on the new and " improved "

HFA propellant. We are unable to get the old for over a year now. That

is why I freaked out...sorry.

I had wondered how in the world can it go in the atmosphere when it goes

into our lungs too.

It is scary to think that they would think there was a problem, and I

really thought there was a problem with all inhalers, and perhaps I

missed something. I really freaked out! Again, it would not surprise me.
