I have similar work experiences as you do--also have been a nurse for 19 years, primarily in maternal child, but also ICU, ER, research, and reproductive endocrinology. I currently work in MCH home care, with a program geared primarily for the high risk peds/neonatal/perinatal clients. Prior to that, I worked in a large Level III Regional Center for high risk OB and neonates--about 6500+ deliveries a year. I *have* worked relief in some small local hospital L & D's, and there IS one of them that staffs as you describe. Frightening though, because while they are usually quiet, all it takes is one complicated labor patient to ruin the whole shift for staffing safely. ----Jeanine Quote
Guest guest Posted March 4, 2000 Report Posted March 4, 2000 Thank you Jeanine Your input is refreshing. I am always worried about that patient who walks in abrupting or crowning with a nuchal cord. (It has happened before when I was alone) Sunny Quote
Guest guest Posted July 15, 2001 Report Posted July 15, 2001 Welll, Jeanine, let's put it this way! The job wasn't the number one priority here in our move to Florida...it was WINTER!!!! So here we are loving the weather aspect of it. The pay is not as generous as it is "up north" as they say here...so that is a big consideration if your coworker wants to move here...and the nurse physician relationships here are a lot different also!!! We'll leave it at that! Anyhow, we are enjoying all that Florida has to offer (my husband is an RN too), and have a beautiful home (cheaper real estate, for pretty homes!)...so we are pretty happy here! Quote
Guest guest Posted July 15, 2001 Report Posted July 15, 2001 Here in Sarasota they have not gotten around to offering anything to us, and I doubt it will happen too soon! Quote
Guest guest Posted July 16, 2001 Report Posted July 16, 2001 Yes, it seems to me that many hospitals throw money into these programs trying to recruit nurses, and that's fine, but as you say, *retention* is just as important! --------Jeanine Re: [OBnurses] Hello There is a hiring "battle" in the Central Florida hospitals right now. If you apply before July 31 at either system and are hired to start work before Sept. 1st, you get a $600/month hiring bonus for 24 months as long as you work 72hr/pay period. You have to be referred by a currently employed RN....and she gets the same bonus as long as you both stay full time..however if the referring nurse quits, the new hire keeps getting her bonus. They have found that a lot of the nurses are switching from A to B and B to A just for the bonus. Maybe they should raise their pay rate and work on retention instead!!! If anyone is interested, they can emailme privately for details. Lori in Orlando Welcome to the OBnurses list! You have the freedom to change your membership settings at any time you choose. Guest guest Posted July 16, 2001 Report Posted July 16, 2001 Personally, I think retention is more important. When hospitals have no retention probs, they become magnet hospitals...which should *really* be the goal of all hospitals. gmc Gay Marie Callahan Re: [OBnurses] Hello There is a hiring "battle" in the Central Florida hospitals right now. Guest guest Posted July 16, 2001 Report Posted July 16, 2001 I agree wholeheartedly Gay Marie. Although, one of my local hospitals is a magnet hospital, and yet they have a terribly high turnover rate, and treat their staff horribly. It's run more by fear than anything else. But the staff at least tries to do the best for the patients, in spite of the dreadful treatment, and for that, they are the consummate professionals. --------Jeanine Re: [OBnurses] Hello There is a hiring "battle" in the Central Florida hospitals right now. Guest guest Posted July 16, 2001 Report Posted July 16, 2001 Doesn't sound like a true magnet hospital. The situation you describe would give the concept of a magnet hospital a bad name. It's too bad. gmc Gay Marie Callahan Re: [OBnurses] Hello There is a hiring "battle" in the Central Florida hospitals right now. Guest guest Posted July 16, 2001 Report Posted July 16, 2001 I know, it IS a shame. They have a good reputation for patient care, but the nurses are *miserable* with the working conditions. The units are nice, and the coworkers are great, but management is totally non supportive. One manager actually told a nurse that the hospital should be her priority and she should be at work--and this was 3 days after her 5 year old son died tragically in a car accident with her husband!! How cold can a manager be? I am very happy in my current job. I get treated with respect, overall, and the job is good. Management has it's problems, but I kind of expect that everywhere, to some degree. --------Jeanine Re: [OBnurses] Hello There is a hiring "battle" in the Central Florida hospitals right now. Guest guest Posted July 27, 2002 Report Posted July 27, 2002 hi ! I work in Alabama at a fairly busy hospital, we hit over 4000 deliveries last year. We have LDRs and then move the mom/baby up to the postpartum floor. We very rarely float anywhere except to the perinatal unit when they have more than 5 patients and need another RN up there. Welcome to the group! I have 5 children from 12 weeks to nearly 12 years old and have also worked at a Childrens hospital before going to L and D. sue [OBnurses] hello Hi my name is and I have worked in labor and delivery for 23 years. First thing is to see her Dr. I am on Treatment and almost done. I am considered non-detectable and hope to remain that way..... Just be there for her and at first I was very selective of who knew I had it. It was my business and no one elses...... Let us know how we can help you. In health, Cosy Quote
Guest guest Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 Janet, thank you so much for emailing me. I really appreciate it and all the information that you have told me. It is a relief to see someone write and say, I have children. My youngest is 10. Informed we shall be Thank You for sharing a part of you with us. Re: Hello , Honey your daughter can live a long life. I am 50 years old. I have 5 children. Two natural born children,2 step children, and 1 adopted child who is 8 years old. I really don't have a idea of when I was infected with the HCV virus. I had been a nurse for 25 plus years. Over the years I have been stuck with needles, bled on and god knows what else. The thing is to get yourself informed. HCV fortunately is a slow moving diease. It takes years before the symptoms start to show. I found out in April or March of 2002 and was just showing the symptoms of the diease. I had fatique and no real reason for it. Then the test results came back with HCV. Did the same thing as you, I wonder whether I would live to see my 8 year old grow to be a woman, etc and etc. Then I talked to others about the diease and got a better idea of what lay before me. I got on treatment and did it with all the gusto I could manage. The most important thing for you and your daughter to do is get informed in the group here. You will see a bar on the side of the page, I have files and links added there with information that you might need. Plus I try hard to find out the information you need if you have questions. So ask questions get informed and this will make the battle alot easier for you and your daughter. And this group of people will be there to help you in any way we can. This is a great group of folks and they are eager to help. Love and Prayers, Janet > Well lets see. I have no education on this at all but I do know everything is going to change and I don't know what that looks like. Guest guest Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 Andy- Welcome to the Group. I found out about a year ago that I was infected. I found out from a blood test that was part of a routine physical. Has your doctor recommended a liver biopsy? As far as I understand it, that's the next step in determining a course of treatment. I had by biopsy last October and it showed no liver damage. My ALT and AST [liver enzyme] levels are only slightly elevated so the gastroenterologist didn't see any reason to recommend drug treatment. In the meantime, like you, I have to have my blood tested periodically for viral load and enzyme levels, which were slightly elevated when I had them done on the 2nd of this month. I'm also taking an herb, milk thistle, which is supposed to help support the liver. Other members of this Group will be able to answer your questions in depth. Guest guest Posted September 11, 2003 Report Posted September 11, 2003 Thank you all for the warm welcome...... Lou, I'm not sure what you mean by 'liver biopsy', but I do remember about last year I got checked by USG and the result said my liver is quite ok. Is this the test you referring to? What kind of herb or milk are you taking now? kind regards, Andi Quote
