I suppose that culture has a say in the kinds of things that are considered common sense. Imagine Jan's boys from India flocking to the hospital to get their faces lifted. Or see CEO's war-paint their cheeks. I'd say keeping yourself alive & well presupposes the monitoring of your state of well-being, and the use of values and preferences (water, a bowl of oatmeal, a nose job) to direct behavior.
