Guest guest
The digest version won't quote the post when replying, so I've copy-pasted below... While many lost some weight, including me, it wasn't from dieting, but a life style change based on food allergies, leaking gut syndrome, and the complex issues we face. " ....That makes a lot of sense, particularly the " complex issues " . I was talking with a friend who has gained the same amount of weight due to increased stress that resulted in poor eating and overeating. She was saying she just needed to cut back on junk food and exercise more and I felt like, " that's great hon, but you've gained weight because you weren't taking care of yourself. I've gained weight for some unfathomable reason due to complications with a chronic illness. Walking another block and forgoing some snacks isn't going to do it for me. " DeAnn said: " Some days a puffiness puts me into clothes one and two sizes larger. The next week, I'll be back into the " smaller " clothes without doing one iota different. Make sense? " ....I also get unexplained swelling or " puffiness " , particularly around my knees and legs, and around my hands, even my face. It makes even wide loose pants uncomfortable to wear. I'm relegated to stretchy sweatpants on those days. Then 2 days later I'm back to " normal " . That annoying issue makes the actual weight gain harder to deal with. Particularly because people don't look at you and think " oh, they have a chronic illness and are having a puffy day " , like " oh they look bad today because they have the flu " . People just think " wow, she looks terrible " . Lovely. Sometimes I want to wear a big sign that says " I look like this because I'm sick " . DeAnn said: " It seems we have to embrace our bodies as they are... We just need to accept that our bodies don't play by normal rules. " It's wonderful that you have such a positive outlook. I agree that when you can't change it you have to learn to accept it. I'm still having problems with that. Not because of the increase in size, but because of the increase in fatty tissue. I'm just not meant to be a large person, my frame is small and can't carry excess weight well like some people. Instead I just end up with belly rolls and hip rolls and sagging knees and cellulite everywhere, like my body doesn't know where to put the weight so it just hangs off me. That's what bothers me the most: the doughyness, flab and absurd cellulite for someone of my size and age. I could handle being larger, I don't think that's unattractive, if only I were even remotely solid at that size. Thanks for your thoughts. Best of health to you. Guest guest
Dyno, Thank you! And best of health to you, as well. Our challenge isn't an easy one. But every little inch we win is worthy of celebration. I know I stand and gawk at my " turkey chin " on those puffy days. Here today, gone tomorrow. I'm thinking we should make this life into a story - like the fairy tales of Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. Make each symptom an evil enitity coming to rob of us our beautiful healthy self. Then, we can battle away and win on paper that which eludes us in life. Ah, the creative spirit. If only it could heal. DeAnn > Thanks for your thoughts. Guest guest
This sounds a lot like what my 23-year-old daughter suffers from: inability to lose weight no matter what her diet/calorie intake is. She's now being treated for low thyroid (even though her lab tests are in the " normal " range). Have you looked at Shomon's material on www.about.com? It's got lots of helpful information, like " is your thyroid making you fat? " Blessings to all. Guest guest
DeAnne, Your daughter could very well have low thyroid. I have low thyroid and hashimotos disease and these have had a big effect on energy levels and weight. There is a great website called the thyro phoenix that has lots of info on thyroid. If she needs to take thyroid hormone see if she can go on the natural one as the body seems to accept it better. (even though most docs will disagree with this. Drug company reps can be very persuasive!) lol dee
