Just as this list is focused on the education/enlightenment of people who are interested in raw dairy about raw dairy......implicit is the understanding and perhaps expectation that some people will change the way they look at milk and perhaps learn and adapt their comsumption to reflect an altered perspective. Saying that we'll all just continue to be referred to as lurkers because that's the status quo is like saying that we should all drink milk from the supermarket since that's where most people in the west get their milk. This list could germinate even more change if it chose to refer to its readers as something more positive than lurkers.

We don't refer to list moderators as list wardens, now do we?

Lurking Policy

Ok guys, Thank you very much for your candor on the lurking policy at Raw Dairy. I appreciate hearing your input on it, and I'm sure Janet does too. After all, the list belongs to all of us, not to only me or only to Janet! ;-) I'm just the co-moderator here, I'm just assisting Janet in the administration of the list. The past few days I've been absent somewhat due to a few things distracting me. I'm sorry about that, I promise I will be back in "full force" shortly! (So be warned!)Anyhow, I assist Janet, but I most certainly do not set policies on this list "or have the final word" as it does not belong to me, but to our "list mama." I will leave it to Janet if she wants to change/modify the lurking policy or however she wants to enforce it. I realize some people do not like the term "lurk" and have negative connotations to it. That term is used widely on the Internet, it is in no way at all a reflection on any part of your individual character. Every one of us appreciates everyone else here! We all bring an unique something to the list which makes it its own. Go Raw Dairy go! Sara Your snowed-in and snowed-under peer Co-ModeratorPLEASE BE KIND AND TRIM YOUR POSTS WHEN REPLYING!

I suspect the frequent post policy comes from a well-founded

suspicion, thanks to the Department of Agriculture....?

And a proud and protective list mamma that will tolerate no back-

handed prowlers wishing to accumulate evidence against our revered

providers of the holy milk.

It was not meant to offend, but rather to protect us.

I also suspect she wouldn't bounce any of us without due process.

Hello Sara,

Let me add my 2 cents to the others who already posted about

the " lurking policy " . I can see and understand the reasons from

which Janet would like everyone to post once per week. However this

would not work in the long turn and will likely turn off people who

contribute to the group. Our " raw dairy " community is small and

still growing with its 149 members. But after time our membership

will increase. I just saw that the native-nutrition group has

already 811 members. If the policy for 1 post/person/week was

applicable there, simple math gives us the following number of

minimum monthly posts:

811 members x 1 post per member x 4 weeks = 3244 posts minimum. Last

month the regular traffic there generated 3334 posts. This means we

could have well over 5000 monthly posts if this policy was

implemented there.

The members of the raw dairy group have diverse background. We have

farmers, homesteaders, stay at home moms, students, employed and

self-employed. Some of us are members of more than one group. We

can't request from the membership of the group to post once/week or

month or face unsubscribtion. Now is winter, which is a slow season

for the farmers/homesteaders. But what happens during the pick

summer months when they are busy from early morning to late at

night? Even a small homestead requires a lot of work. Can you

imagine these folks going throw 5-6000 or more monthly posts and

still participating in the debates? Do we kick them because they are

too busy on the farm and have no time to sit in front of the

computer and participate in the discussions? You can't leave your

cows or goats un-milked, your chickens and pigs un-fed, or your

produce un-picked. These are the very people we as consumers want to

support. Or what about the mother, which sick child is in need of

all of her attention? Do we require her to contribute or else? Or

the student having the exams, the employed and self-employed facing

deadline in their daily tasks.

Then there is another angle. It is fun when we are here and want to

share, learn and support each other in the quest of healthy dairy

products. However the mandatory element would take the fun part out.

Instead pleasure participating in the group would turn in chore. The

daily life's of many people are already hectic and the last thing

they need is the extra stress. Let's leave everyone to participate

in the conversations when they choose to do so. Otherwise we will

lose valuable members of this community.
