Guest guest
Hi Vicky, I just read this new message you sent. My son is 9 months now. He had quite a bit of flattening on the right back side of his head and on the side of his head. We have been aggressively repositioning (rolled towels and wedges with velcro to prop him on his side) for about 2 months. We have seen some improvement. His head on the right side has rounded out near the bottom and the right side of his head has rounded out. He still has a flat SPOT (the whole side used to be flat) and his ears are still misaligned from the top. When we used to look at him from the top before his head looked like a parallelogram (sp?). It's like we wanted to push his forehead on the right side back and the back of his head on the left side forward. Anyways, it no longer looks like a parallelogram but he still hasn't rounded out completely. I don't want this information to make anyone think that repositioning is the answer, because we are still pursuing other opinions and will be talking to a neurologist, but I think in the meantime, while we wait to see specialists, that repositioning is definately worth a shot and if you see improvement then that's great, but since our babes are older I would still keep talking to doctors to see what can be done as far as the headband and helmet. Hope this helps (I know it's long) ----- Original Message ----- From: <ykciv88@...> <Plagiocephalyegroups> Sent: Thursday, April 27, 2000 6:41 AM Subject: Will it round out??? > Hi everyone! > My son will be 10 months and we are in the process of waiting > for a final diagnosis from the doctor. Guest guest
, your description of your son's head and your repositioning success sounds EXACTLY like our situation, except Cameron is only 7 months. We debated and went back and forth for a month about whether or not we should do the helmet (although we had the appointment scheduled anyway), but in the end decided to go for it.... he still has a flat spot and his ears are misaligned. He gets cast tomorrow! -Pam ----- Original Message ----- From: Thornton Plagiocephalyegroups Sent: Thursday, April 27, 2000 12:57 PM Subject: Re: Will it round out??? Guest guest
Hi Pam, We just came back from an appointment with our family doctor. He too has noticed a difference in 's head! We went over the letter he sent to the neurosurgeon re: banding and having consultation with us. We're hoping to have an answer from this doctor within the next week. The reason our Dr. wrote a letter and sent pics of 's head is because we live over 1000 miles away from the nearest children't hospital. Anyways it's great to know that other families are in similar situations and are seeing SOME results with repositioning. ----- Original Message ----- From: Doug & Pam Plagiocephalyegroups Sent: Thursday, April 27, 2000 7:54 PM Subject: Re: Will it round out??? , your description of your son's head and your repositioning success sounds EXACTLY like our situation, except Cameron is only 7 months. Guest guest
We have similar problem and have seen little improvement but it was also after 4 mos. when we realized that our daughter was not just using one side of her body but in fact her head was flattened on right and back right. yeeman -----Original Message-----From: Doug & Pam <hambug@...>Plagiocephalyegroups <Plagiocephalyegroups>Date: Thursday, April 27, 2000 9:55 PMSubject: Re: Will it round out??? , your description of your son's head and your repositioning success sounds EXACTLY like our situation, except Cameron is only 7 months. Guest guest
Hi everyone! I am a new member and am thankful to have found this group! I have this same question...My husband and I took our son to Cranial Technologies on Wednesday morning regarding his flat spot. They advised us to consider the DOC Band. This, of course, is not the advice of the pediatrician. The ped is telling us that it will correct itself and that we should not worry. I am so stressed - what is the right decision? We noticed the flat spot when our son was 2 months old. He is 4 months now - it is not better. We have tried repositioning but I do not see an improvement. I understand this is the perfect age to correct but I am torn between the decision to get the band versus not. I have seen casts of infant heads at 12 months and 21 months where treatment was not done and it is not a place I want to be down the road. I would appreciate knowing what percentage corrects itself versus the percentage that is corrected by treatment - does anyone know this? Also, I am so afraid that my happy little boy will be miserable in the band - however, all the children I have seen seem to be fine. Help..... I need some friendly advice and understanding. Thanks, Tammy Duffy > -----Original Message----- > From: Thornton [sMTP:bthornton@...] > Sent: Friday, April 28, 2000 1:32 PM > Plagiocephalyegroups > Subject: Re: Will it round out??? > > Hi Pam, > > We just came back from an appointment with our family doctor. Guest guest
This is the paper my neurosurgeon believes which means doing nothing is as good as the band. I no longer believe it. I saw the results of a child he said not to treat and couldn't believe that was his recommendation. The parents started treatment anyway and it helped alot. However, since his case was so severe and they waited until he was a year the poor boy has a noticably deformed head. The boy is now 3. Seeing this is what made me make up my mind to treat my 6.5 month old NOW! They had the same problem with their second son and treated him at 4 months. I saw his head at 10 months and he looks GREAT! Guest guest
Hi Tammy! I'm no expert, but it seems like most kids here are experiencing good success with bands/helmets. Our pediatrician also told us Cameron's head would correct itself, but our craniofacial doctor told us that his head would not likely do any more rounding out on its own after 6 months, even though his head would still be growing. I think the period between 2 and 4 months is the time where you would be most likely to see success from repositioning, but if you haven't seen improvement, you might want to consider the band. This was a hard decision for us too as Cameron's case is fairly mild, but the reasons not to do it (e.g., cost, inconvenience, dealing with staring) didn't seem very important compared to the benefit of fixing his head and avoiding potential future problems. -Pam ----- Original Message ----- From: Duffy, Tammy 'Plagiocephalyegroups' Sent: Friday, April 28, 2000 1:41 PM Subject: RE: Will it round out??? If you wait to make your decision, chances are, it will take a while by the time you get the ball rolling. I have a 7mos old that has been in helmet/PT since Jan. We lost 3mos because our first ped felt he would out grow it and it was no big deal, hair would cover flat spot. We finally changed drs and are now seeing neuro at Univ of Chicago. We decided right away after dr mentioned helmet. We figured our son had nothing to lose!! Since joing this group and doing alot of research, I discovered there is alot more to plagio than having a flat spot. Parents have noticed not only obvious distortions of features such as ears are misaligned, one eye may be smaller, one cheeck fuller, etc as well as misaligned jaws and frequent ear infections. Sorry this is so long. Again, I stress, DON'T wait. You may be loosing precious and valuable time. Belinda (Indiana)

Guest guest
Thanks Doug. My husband and I have decided to go forward. This has been our gut feeling from the beginning. We are in the process of getting a letter of recommendation from our ped (reluctantly) and getting approval through insurance. I do have another question... I have been reading several of the other messages and most everyone is mentioning a CAT Scan. Should I take my son to a pediatric neurosurgeon for a 2nd opinion? Several messages are mentioning closed sutures - how do I know that is not our problem - My husband and I went directly to Cranial Tech here in Atlanta and began discussing the band based on their recommendation. Please respond - I have so much to learn about this. Guest guest
Tammy, Check with CT and see what they recommend. The CT location that I am seeing in WI wanted to make sure that the sutures in my son's head had not closed prematurely so we went ahead and had a cat scan done. From my understanding either a cat scan or MRI are the best ways to get an accurate view. It is very rare for the sutures to close prematurely. Also, the favorable results gave me some peace of mind. Good luck, --- In Plagiocephalyegroups, " Duffy, Tammy " <tammy_duffy@i...> wrote: > Thanks Doug. > > My husband and I have decided to go forward. This has been our gut feeling > from the beginning. Guest guest
Since I am traveling a distance to CT (2 1/2 hours each way) I had a neurosurgen locally do a cat scan who is familiar with plagio. The CT location that I am seeing also does scans but I am not sure if they all provide that service. > > > Thanks Doug. > > > > > > My husband and I have decided to go forward. Guest guest
Tammy, If you went straight to cranial tech. they should have a pretty good eye at distinguishing between CS and plagio. there are some obvious visual differences (such as ear placement, etc.) They also do check-ups every week (or 2, depending on age), so if they do not see any changes in head shape in a short period of time, they will probably recommend further testing. We did not do any cat scans, x-rays or the like with our daughter. We are pretty comfortable with the diagnosis. If you are still uncomfortable tho, you may want to ask them to do these tests, although I hear they are not too fun (not torturous, of course!) Hope this helps. kendra "Duffy, Tammy" wrote: Thanks Doug. Guest guest
Thanks Kendra. I did call CT to ask if they did cat scans. They do not in this office in Atlanta. I feel confident based on their diagnosis that all is ok. I am just so new at all this that I am torn between the " hurry up and do it " mode and the " I'm not so sure " mode. Just those parent jitters that I know everyone has. It has been wonderful reading all the success stories and hearing other concerns and struggles. I want to make the right decision. Guest guest
Tammy, Grayson is absolutely precious!!! My son would be what is considered to be mild to moderate. We have the same reaction from people. Everyone I've pointed it out to has said they didn't notice it but once I showed them they could see it. I believe them because I've told them to be honest and these people are family and close friends and I know many of them have been honest about other issues that I would have said LIE LIE LIE - hahaha - anyways I do believe that if your child is moderate that most people probably don't notice it and us moms do because we are always inspecting and now focussing on their little noggins. I can't notice anything on the pic. All I see is an adorable baby with a beautiful head of hair. ----- Original Message ----- From: Duffy, Tammy <tammy_duffy@...> <Plagiocephalyegroups> Sent: Monday, May 01, 2000 10:07 AM Subject: RE: Will it round out??? > Doug: > > I looked at the picture of Cameron in the Files. Guest guest
Do you mind saying who your craniofacial doctor is. Please reply directly to lpaquin@.... Thanks, At 04:19 PM 4/28/00 -0500, you wrote: Hi Tammy! Guest guest
Thank you. Grayson has lost a lot of his hair. He had so much at birth. I think it makes him look like a " little man " . Grayson's flat spot is on the right side. From the side view and aerial view he looks just like the parrallelogram (spelling?) drawing that I have seen. Guest guest
Grace was born with a ton of hair (which stuck straight up) and lost most of it as well. A little girl at Grace's daycare (Talyn) has thick dark hair. She's starting to lose it on the top. So she looks like she's been struck with male pattern baldness - a shiny pate with a dark thick fringe of hair around the edges. He had so much at birth. I think it makes him look like a " little man " . Grayson's flat spot is on the right side. From the side view and aerial view he looks just like the parrallelogram (spelling?) drawing that I have seen.
