To form emulsions aka creams and lotions, you need energy. As I recall, this

has something to do with the Gibb's Free Energy.

You can use mechanical energy, chemical energy or chemical energy.

High shear stirring/mixing can be used to make a beautiful, luxurious emulsion

that can never be made in a production enviroment without some changes.

High shear mixing can and will breakdown long chain molecules. As in Carbomers.

I've seen many creams and lotions made by homecrafters that depend on high shear

stick stirrers and would not be stable otherwise.

Emulsifiers produce the chemical energy.

To me, a well made emulsion uses a blend of heat, mechanical and thermal energy.

I think formula should be effective and efficient.

In my experience, most contract packagers do not have high shear mixing

equipment. That's why we have emulsifiers.
