Closed cell foam for attic insulation

I talked to someone who is a dealer for Icyene open cell foam because I noticed

also listed a closed cell Icyene product. Person who called me thought I was

interested in open cell. When I said closed cell he said that noone should use

closed cell foam in an enclosure that 'houses people or animals'. I assume the

animal reference was to scare me. Perhaps they only use their closed cell

product for small applications. He said if anyone recommended closed cell foam

for insulation in a home where there people or animals live they must be

uneducated. I live in Kentucky, so he said 'un-ed-YOU-cated'. He said they

don't even allow it in CA.

He said maybe in Canada is okay because it's so cold there. However I had

closed cell foam sprayed in house for air sealing and smelled nothing even

though I was home. On the other hand I have read that some people smell the

Icyene product down in the house for sometimes a long time after it is

installed. He denied that that ever happens but said he wasn't referring to

smell anywayS, but to 'thermal drift'?

I told him I wish he'd mention that to the Greater Cincinnati Energy Alliance

that provides money to people who make energy saving alterations to their homes

and works with the local provider of gas and electricity here, as they paid part

of the installation of closed cell foam at my house recently for air sealing.

I blew him off because in general, when someone knocks their competitor before

even bidding on the job himself, they usually turn out to be the higher bidder.

I guess if you do don't do anything better than other people, just charge more,

the strategy to their competition sound incompetent.

He kept referring to me and the people I am talking to as unedYOUcated but has

anyone ever heard of 'thermal drift' being a problem with closed cell foam

installations. The energy soluations company I dealt with suggested to me after

discussions that foaming might be the answer for me as less problematic for

house occupants.
