Guest guest
Without sounding ignorant, what in the world does the PTI's in Texas do? I know in MA the Federation for Children with Special Needs the 1st Parent Training and Information Center in the Country does a lot around parent information, training, referral and so much more including working with other organizations so that parents and others are well educated on the system. I see such pockets in Texas unless I am seeing things wrong, and I see this list serve and 2 others basically giving the best advice and information. Check out what our PTI does at _http://www.fcsn.org_ (http://www.fcsn.org) also do you all have Parent Consultant/Advocate trainings? Guest guest
Paretners Resource Network operates three PTIs in Texas. All three PATH, PEN and TEAM do a variety of parent training programs, as close to parents as possible, interact with local, state agencies and parent support groups. We are not as complex an organization as FCNS which has a number of great programs in addition to the PTI grant. As someone who has lived in around the country, including the Boston area of MA I can tell you that our biggest problem is size and population. Boston, your largest city has a population of 581,616 your total state population is 6,433,422 and the state size is 7,840 sq mi. Contrast that with Texas, we have several cities much larger -- Houston, 2,009,690; San , 1,214,725; Dallas, 1,208,318; Austin, 672,011; Fort Worth, 585,122; El Paso, 584,113; the total state population is estimates to be 22,118,509 and the size is 261,797 sq miles! In fact some of our counties are comparable to some of the smaller states. It is just so difficult to reach the those who need our services. As part of being Webmaster, I do outreach on the web. We do have a list serve but its primarypurpose is to put out announcements and news items. We have chosen that it not be an interactive one because there are a number of specific lists such as this but I will respond to individuals plus refer them along to a staff member who is located nearest them and hopefully get them into needed training sessions. Guest guest
I just didn't know enough about your PTI I think it is great as I know Texas is a huge state. I also have heard from different providers that there is a huge surge of parent involvement in all area's of the disability and education community you should be very proud of this accomplishment.
