This could have been written almost word for word about our daughter Dorothy

(2.5 yrs. MDS). She loves to perform! Always ready to act something out or

sing to family and friends. She is always shy at first with others. The hands go

up and behind her ears. Once she goes to a place more than once she is OK,

i.e., library play time, gym day care while I work out, etc. Each time she gets

more and more used to the others. She warms up to adults first.

She loves signing. She knows so many. We do the animals to Old Mc,

things at playground, familiar things to her.

So nice to hear the similarities! Take care, Alice

Mosaic DS Community:

Hi! We are the Riedys from Brookings, South Dakota. My husband

came accross the http://www.imdsa.com site while researching for a

doctoral class. It really struck home as we have a 2 year old

daughter with MDS. Tim from the article sounds so much like our

Whitney. She has excelled in every area, but struggles some with

speech and fine motor skills. We didn't know during my pregnancy

that Whitney had Down Syndrome. She was a healthy, 8 pound baby who

just didn't " look quite right " at birth. We noticed the

characteristic look right away, but there were no other signs of

Down Syndrome. One week after we left the hospital, the geneticist

called us with the results of the blood test and could only tell us

that it was Downs, but it was mosaic. From there, we were on our

own.

Our community offered amazing support from the minute we arrived

home. Although, we never actually felt the let down or sadness that

it seems most parents go through. We were so thrilled that she had

absolutely no health problems, that we decided to be greatful for

that and just teach her and love her! It was and is hard for us to

fit in with the local support network in many ways though. Whitney

is doing so well that she is doing many things that their 4 and 5

year olds are doing. She knows upwards of 50 signs and she walked

very early and has continued to grow at the 50th percentile on

the " average " charts. She is a very sassy 30 pounds!

The one thing we have enjoyed the most with our daughter is her

ability to mimic and communicate. Not as much verbally, but with

signs and expressions. She is always putting on a show and our

families are convinced that she will live her adult life in

Hollywood! She is very shy and timid though when not in a familiar

setting. Which is our fault I guess. We are guilty of sheltering

her! I work 2 days a week as a nurse and one of my best friends

watches her for me, so she has never had to go to daycare. She has

received Birth to 3 services since she was 2 months old and has

benefited from that.

All in all, our first time parent status has been more than we ever

dreamed it could be. We are so lucky to have her and I wouldn't

change a thing about her. We know she is going to excell in life

just because of the internal fire she has. We would love to meet

other families with an MDS member. As far as we know, Whitney is

currently the only child with MDS in South Dakota. We are willing

to travel and/or talk to anyone. (We love to show her off!!)

Again, thanks for putting your story out there. You definately are

not alone! I am glad to hear your son is doing so well and is going

be a successful writer! Maybe he could some day write a play for

our Whitney to act in!

Sincerely yours,

Josh, Koti, and Whitney Riedy

Alice:

Great to hear your story about Dorothy! She does sound a lot like

our 2 year old Whitney. Espcecially the hands behind the ears! She

is always doing that in uncomfortable situations! She is very shy

and it takes her a while to warm up to people. She doesn't go to

daycare and I am sure that is a big part of that. I would love to

hear more from you, since our daughters are nearly the same age.
