Michele.. as far as i know...no difference, no special considerations. My

son had 3 operations, all under general anesthesia... no problems whatsoever!!

Good luck with all the testing!!

Thanks for your reply--and also to the other member who replied so quickly as

well. This may be another piece of the puzzle. I was told by our surgeon,

who has cared for my son since birth and therefore has known him longer than I,

that there were anesthesia complications during his first surgery. I have to

wonder if it is related to this??? All of the anesthesia folks who care for

him now are pediatric specialists and know his history (not the MDS

possibility, but his past history)--thankfully we have not had any anesthesia

problems

since he has been with us.

Surgery is scheduled for December 30th and we would appreciate any prayers

and/or good thoughts that anyone can send our way. I think I will call the

ENT's office re: this. I had researched about him quite a while ago and

remember

reading that he does presentations re: ENT issues for those with DS for a

local parent support group. Remember thinking that he must be a good guy. He

has

always been very kind and understanding so I am sure that he will understand

all my new concerns. I will mention it at the pre-anesthesia screening as

well.

Thanks for forwarding the question on to your friend. I'm an information

hound and will certainly make a note of this info if she is able to provide it.

Michele,

Because he has already had surgeries in the past, I wouldn't worry too much.

But, there are some anestesias that are not recommended for those with Down

syndrome. Some doctors will disagree to this, but it is a fact that some people

with any form of Down syndrome tend to have trouble with certain anestesias. My

son, Tim, has a horrible time waking up from these anestesias. I have copied

this letter to my dear friend, . She has told me under many occasions what

the name of these anestisias are, and even though I promise each time to write

them in a safe place....I always lose the names when I need them! LOL So, let us

hope that will not kill me for asking once more for the names of the

anestesias! Also, another consideration is small airways. If this has not been a

problem in the past, then I would not worry about it either.

I think, that you would feel better by telling the ENT about the possible

diagnosis of MDS. That way, they will know everything that you are dealing with

right now, and they will know what to look for during the surgery.

Why don't they just take the samples while he is having surgery and they can

send them over to the geneticist for testing? When are his surgeries scheduled?

Please keep us updated so we can keep you in our prayers!

Are there any special considerations/precautions regarding surgery for kids

with MDS? My son is scheduled for a tonsillectomy and 2 other procedures

related to his GI problems at the end of the month. It will all be done under

one

sedation. He always has preadmission testing before surgery which includes an

evaluation of cardiac status (blood pressure, listening with stethoscope and

EKG if anything appears out of sorts) This will be before we even start the

testing for the MDS so I am not sure if it is necessary to talk with the ENT/GI

folks about this. Thanks. Michele

Thank you for giving me, once again, the information! It is the chloryl

hydrate that Tim has such trouble with! Once, he was under for a 24 hour period

because of it!

Hi Kristy,

I dont mind a bit sharing this info again..always glad to help. The first drug

is atropine which is sometimes given before anesthesia to help dry up

secretions. If this has to be given is should be in the least amount as possible

as this drug tends to prolong the effect of anesthesia. The other is chloryl

hydrate which also with our kids seems to keep them under longer than necessary.
