Hair breakage can occur with any change in thyroid status. That occurs where new stronger hair meets old weaker hair. If that is the case, it should resolve as the new hair grows out.

If it is coming out with the roots, it may be auto-immune.

Various kinds of anemia, including low ferritin, can also cause hairloss.

If you are concerned about it, do talk to your doctor. In any case, we cannot give you any direct advice on this site.

Hi Jan,

My hair does not break, the strands are thick and strong, they come

out at the root with a bulb at the end. It's always been like that.

It does grow back but not fast enough.

I do take iron for low iron but my iron levels still fell. What do

you mean by auto immune?

thanks,

Yvette

Hashimoto's is auto-immune. Hairloss may be related to other auto-immune diseases, too.

I do have Hashi's but my last lab showed low antibodies. Can hashi's

still cause hairloss even with meds optimized?

Also, nutritional deficiencies (in particular vitamin A and B

vitamins) can contribute to hair loss. If you're taking iron and

your ferritin is going down, then you need to be screened for celiac

and/or H. Pylori. Celiac is another autoimmune disease. Autoimmune

means your body is attacking itself, which means your organs,

nervous system, etc. can be destroyed, which is what happens to

folks with Hashi's. For celiac, it's the tissue in the intestines

that's damaged. Also, folks can be sensitive to gluten and not have

celiac and still be impacted, in particular, the nervous system.

Anemia (both iron deficient and B vitamin) are hallmark symptoms of

celiac - it's due to your gut not absorbing nutrients. Also, many

celiacs have issues with absorption of vitamin A and are often

deficient in that. If you have H. Pylori, then it can interfere with

the absorption of iron. In addition, per past postings, all three of

these things seem to come in the same gene set. The H. Pylori has

been correlated with hypothyroidism, in particular if you have the

main celiac gene.
