Kindergarten at 5??

I wondered if any of you can point me in the right direction. We

live in Humble ISD. My son 4.5 turns 5 in July.

For both of my children (daughter 2) I wanted them to attend

Kindergarten at 6 years old. They are summer birthdays and this was

my wish before I even knew about my son's regression into autism.

All of his friends will turn 5 from May-Nov. They will all wait to

go to Kindergarten at 6 the following year. They will all attend

another year of preschool.

I want Tyler to have one more year of preschool. For him I want 2

days mainstream Montesori (currently very successful) and 3 days with

the district. They will have a campus with multiple options PPCD

and head start on the same campus etc...

At last ARD they are saying that Tyler won't qualify for SCD any

longer. (severe comm class for autism) Kids usually move to the

older SCD class or transistion to mainstream.

So they want him to transistion to Kindergarten. What do I have to

do to get what I feel is right for my son? IF my child weren't on

the spectrum I would have waited until 6 to send to K.

This is ridiculous to me that I want another year of intervention and

for some reason he has to be herded into K simply because he turns 5

this summer. Not only have we had to fight to " catch him up, " but

he is a summer baby and would be the youngest in the class.

What rights do I have? I want him to have access to head start

peers even if they are 4 and he is 5. He should get another year of

preschool as all his typical peers get.

If I have too, I'll mainstream him into full time Montessori or a

typical preschool for 5. But I feel that he should have district

support to continue to get him ready to successfully mainstream into

Kindergarten.

Thank you
