Guest guest
Here is a draft of a storybook I'm putting together for Allie's class this Sunday. I read the first part to and Allie earlier tonight and Allie was listening and smiling. I think it might have helped her to understand what's going on with herself. You guys look it over and tell me anywhere that I'm wrong or off, please! I think it's pretty good. My goal is to get all the kids to see Allie not as an object to make fun of, but someone who they should help. Debi P.S. You guys like it, I'm gonna add illustrations. I might get a copyright and start selling them. and Her Sister Once upon a time... …there was a little baby born. Her name was . Jesus gave to her mommy, daddy, and her church, Cornerstone. grew. was very special to her mommy, daddy, and her church. Then, one day, Jesus gave a sister named Allie. Jesus also gave Allie to their mommy, daddy, and their church. and Allie grew and played together. They loved each other very much. One day Allie stopped being able to talk. Allie did not look at people when they talked to her. Allie could not walk down steps or speak at all. Allie stopped playing with most of the time. Everyone was very sad. Allie's Mommy, Daddy, , and church began to pray for her. We all prayed that Allie would be able to talk. We all prayed that Allie would be able to walk down steps. We all prayed especially that Allie would begin to play with again. Everyone was very worried. Allie's Mommy, Daddy, and took Allie to many doctors. The doctors ran many tests. Sometimes Allie even got shots to take blood! Ewwwwwe! The doctors finally told Allie's Mommy, Daddy, and that Allie has something called autism. Autism is something that makes peoples brains work differently. Boys and girls with autism sometimes cannot feel or hear or see, and other times they feel too much or hear too much or see too strongly. Sometimes a light touch can feel like getting hit, and sometimes a hard hit doesn't feel at all. Sometimes quiet noises hurt and sometimes loud noises aren't heard. Sometimes colors are hard to see and sometimes some colors are so bright they hurt. Boys and girls with autism also cannot understand words. Sometimes a friend may say a word like " cat " and it's heard as " hat " . Sometimes a friend may say, " Do you want to go play? " and it sounds like " ddd wwww pplpll? " It can be very hard for a girl or boy with autism to play and listen and do what they are supposed to do. Since the doctors figured out that Allie is autistic, Allie started going to special people to help Allie. Allie went to people called speech pathologists and occupational therapists. They help teach people with autism how to speak and how to play. Allie now attends a special school just for helping boys and girls with autism and other things. Some kids who go to Allie's school are in wheel chairs, and some kids at Allie's school wear hearing aides and some wear special eyeglasses to help them see. Jesus made Allie perfect, and Jesus made all her classmates perfect, and Jesus made all of you perfect! Today, and me, and Allie's Mommy, have some great news! Allie can now talk some! Jesus is helping her speak! Allie can now look at people some! Jesus is helping Allie to look! And, most importantly, Allie can now play with her sister ! Everyone is getting very excited and thanking Jesus for helping Allie! Allie's birthday will be very soon. Allie will soon be coming here to class with each of you. and I want each of you to know how glad we will be for your helping Allie. Since each of you are such special boys and girls, and because Jesus gave each of you Allie, you each have a very important job to do. We need you to be very nice and very patient with Allie, just like Jesus would. Here's what you can do. When you are playing, please be patient with Allie if she doesn't understand what you are doing. If Allie doesn't look at you when you are talking to her, please know that she doesn't mean to not look. Please be nice and know that she likes you very much and wants to be friends. Please, never, ever say anything that might hurt her feelings. After all, each of you has been given the special job of helping Allie and we are all depending on you. Jesus knew that one day Allie would need each of you to be her friend. So, really soon, 's sister Allie will be here, playing and learning with each of you. Now , Mommy, Daddy, and our church will all thank Jesus for Allie's special friends, YOU!
