Yahoo mail is notorious for being erratic with incoming mail. So are most other web based email programs. If you switch from Yahoo, Hotmail etc. to a non web based email program, I'm sure you will see a tremendous difference. Mozilla, Netscape, Outlook Express etc. all have very good email programs.
