The pronouncement: 'Borderline Personality Disorder was once

Hysteria', will I explain as follows:

The historic-scientific-theoretical theory of Kuhn ('The

Structure of Scientific Revolutions', Chicago 1962/1970) about

science sees the development of science as a succession of paradigms.

The history of the pathology can be charaterized as the succession of

three stages/phases/paradigms, which can be indicate as follows:

1) 'In Vivo', 'in the living life',circa 400 BC- circa 1600: the

theory of the four 'humores'(body-fluid): black gall, water, blood,

mucus.

2) 'In Vitro', 'in glas', circa 1500 - now: the theory of the

pathologic/anatomic demonstrable lesion on macro-, micro- and at last

sub-microscopic level (the biochemical lesion).

3) 'In Mumero', 'in the number': the modern quantitative medical

science/ 'Evidence Based Medicin' on the base of meta-analyses of

Randomised Clinical Trials- nowadays still topical.

In the booklet : 'L'hysterique, le sexe et le medecin', author Lucien

Israël is to be read: " In the 'Dictionnaire encyclopédique des

Science médicales'(1889) is mentioned: " The definition of hysteria is

never given and shall never be given, by a doctor. Hysteria is a

neuroses, what means that the specific lesion is unknown. " 'In Vitro'

was it in 1889 not possible to make a definition of Hysteria, because

of the volatility of the symptoms, the dynamics of the disorder.

Hypothesis arised pure on static images. Therefore doctors paid, I

think, no attention to this disorder.

In 1980 is BPD classified in the DSM of the American Psychiatric

Association because it was than possible to make a

definition/criteria about Hysteria/BPD in the paradigm of 'In

Numero'. Thank to SWOE we all can know the numbers of the definition

of BPD. Doctors still pay almost no attention to BPD because there is

no good effective treatment for this disorder. Bp's who do not want

to change themselves get no care. The disorder is too complex to be

treated by laymen.

I think that through these developments for new generations it will

stay still difficult to reach a situation that there will be no KO's

anymore. Perhaps will a new paradigm arise in the near future.

The theory of Kuhn I have learned in some lectures of 'Studium

Generale' at the University in my home-town.
