Hi Ellen, I know!! I have the exact same problem. I have lived with it for almost 20yrs! All of the "red nodules" leave indentations. However EVENTUALLY (sometimes a year or so) they will go away. I have one that never did. Its no fun, I know. ESPECIALLY DURING A EPOSIDE! Lots of love to you, AJellenlovesgames wrote: I've been getting EN nodules for about 20 years now and wonder if this is universal. The nodules will last for a couple months, going through the stages of red, large, painful, inflamed lump...to flat, dark purple, somewhat painful hard lump. Then....eventually when it goes away completely, it leaves behind an indentation in my leg! I have spots where I can see there were lumps from 20 years

ago! Will it ever go away and why do they DO that?!?!? I'm terribly sick of having these and one of these days, feel like just taking out a knife and cutting them out. :( I would never do it of course, but I sure get tempted when I can't sleep at night for the sheets on my legs cause so much pain....~Ellen

Hi Ellen and AJ,The indentation is caused by destruction of the fat layer. I know that I have lost the fat layer where my lumps used to be,[ on the lower, inner area above the ankle]. I never got the indentations though. It only affects my left leg which I call my "EN Leg", and since I have thin legs, it isn't too obvious. But if you compare my legs, the EN leg is thinner. I am hoping since the fat is gone, maybe the EN will not come back. My thinking is if EN is inflammation of the fat and the fat is destroyed, maybe the EN will stop. My remissions are lasting longer in any event.Here is anEN Link Erythema nodosum can be self-limited and resolve on its own in 3 to 6

weeks. Upon resolution, it may leave only a temporary bruised

appearance or leave a chronic indentation in the skin where the fatty

layer has been injured.The loss of fat is called Lipoatrophy DISORDERS OF FAT AND SUBCUTANEOUS TISSUES

Lipoatrophy

Lipoatrophy

may be localized, partial (upper trunk) or total; it may occur in

isolation or associated with atrophy of other deeper structures (such a

panatrophy).

Localized areas of lipoatrophy may occur in the following situations:

injection sites: insulin lipoatrophy (Fig. 18.43), intralesional/depot steroid injections (Figs 18.44 and 18.45);

postinflammatory: following panniculitis;

idiopathic: thighs (lipoatrophia semicircularis, possibly related to pressure), abdomen (centrifugal lipodystrophy, Fig. 18.46), and others.Maybe removing the "bad tissue" with a cannula like the ones they use to suck out fat in liposuction, might "cure EN in some cases like mine where the same spot kept getting inflammed. But this has never been done, to my knowledge, and I doubt any doctor would try it.Love,
