, I'm glad my ramblings are meaningful to you.

The search for truth is central to me. I need it as an anchor

because of the quicksand I grew up with. I see science and religion

as complementary paths to truth. Both are needed to get the whole

picture. Maybe the arts are a third path, also necessary. I am

interested not only in science, but in the philosophy of science -

" metaphysics " in the strict sense, the study of the nature of

science. I don't have any new ideas here, but Karl Popper's

philosophy of science makes sense to me and it seems to be accepted

among the few scientists who are curious about what science is.

LOL, I am chewing on my fingernails, not on the ends but in the

middle. I am sure I do it all the time but I hadn't noticed until

you mentioned it.

Sorry Dan,

Didn't want to start something with the nail thing... What's funny

is that I never did this until I had a major depersonalization

in '99 when gaslighted by nada at an all-time low in my life. My

husband used to chew his nails and mustache constantly and stopped

nearly completely when he finally found adequate treatment for

ADHD. Yesterday, he consoled me when I started getting furious over

the bank, patriot act, etc. We both laughed since it seems we had a

role reversal, now that he's very temperate and I've been a melt-

down crescendo. If he can get turned around, there's hope for all

of us!

I use the term " metaphysics " in a most strict sense, too. That new

age version is far too strange for me, but I think it's just a

different way of describing points at which the tangible and

intangible worlds intersect. Like looking at the same object from a

different country with different languages and thought. (Reminds me

of how my husb always says that he thinks the only people that can

fully comprehend physics are Asian. Perhaps because their written

language is so visual.) He was tickled that you referenced

Schrodinger's Cat-- a topic of conversation when we first started

dating.

I've got a copy of Popper's Philosophy of Science and havent read it

yet. Other authors I've read have made reference to Popper and made

me curious. Of the scientists and professors I know, most of them

know little to nothing about ethics or logic or philosophy as

related to science. They all know a little Bacon, but Popper (who I

think I like better from what I've read about his ideas) gets lost

somewhere. Hmmm. Where did I put that book?

I, too, pick at hangnails -- fortunately, not nearly as much as I

used to. I also used to pick at split ends like a fiend (even during

exams in college!).

It was a relief when I realized I wasn't doing these nearly as much

any more, and certainly without the same level of intense focus they

used to command. I think the shift happened around the same time

that I started to shut down the negative tapes on constant loop in

my head....hmm....

Journeywork,

Thank you. It's comforting to know that I'm not completely unique

in all of this. I'm not so focused on the behavior like I was at

first, especially knowing that BPs self-injure.

So did you smash the tapes with a sledgehammer? If it were that

simple, we probably wouldn't have as much to banter around and anti-

depressant sales would be minimal.
