Guest guest
My non-verbal son is now 17, but his step dad and I agreed when he was very young that we would continue to include him everywhere we went. I had a leash for him between the ages of 3-5. A necessary item for his continued safety, but then I had to figure out how to keep him from taking it off! He went through a period where he would jump out of the car...as it was moving. stopped talking at 3, but made(and still does) all kinds of noises. I learned very quickly to have "tunnel vision"... no one else mattered to me but my son and his sisters. I made a point to NOT look at people's reactions to my son's noises and behaviors. I simply tended to him, cleaning up the messes, removing him from other people's tables, buying them another drink, etc. I of course would explain that he was autistic, but back then, not very many people knew what it was...they would say stuff like, Oh yes, my niece likes to draw too...Ummm!...I changed it to"My son has Autism." I had business cards made that explained my son's dilemma bc I simply did not have time to make people understand. My son behaves very well 9 out of 10 times(unless he is going through a healing reaction) in public places now and has for several years. I would not have done it any other way.
