Guest guest Posted October 4, 2004 Report Share Posted October 4, 2004 I just read Alice 's " The Truth Will Set You Free " (as a quote of hers in UBM really spoke to me and her stuff looked really good. Counselor was excited and said she was a good choice.) Anyway, Alice references McCourt noting that he never rises up against his tormentors but remains loving and tolerant through transcending it through humor. Although she honored him, she also stated that perhaps these things shouldn't be laughed at as some laughter perpetuates blindness. (Kind of like someones reference to cruel humor and helpful humor a couple of weeks ago.) She voiced concern that laughing off pain could prevent us from finding the resources that can help us heal. How can we help the problem if we encourage laughter and brevity? It's probably like everything else in the BP's little world: they just use what should be apauling to build their own self-defenses. Sounds reminisecnt of recent post that said their childhood could be completely invalidated in one statement. I can hear someone saying, " Well his experiences were used to write a praised piece of literature. " --legitamizing the abuse???-- " The author turned out alright. " The BP sees and remembers what they want and forget the stuff that hits too close to home, I would be curious to see how BPs react to the book as opposed to their KOs who can use it to validate and laugh. Just thought it was interesting that the book was mentioned. seems a bit too zealous against corporal punishment in that book and makes me wonder about her personal history. I see how she used the book as an example, but she suggests that the author didn't fully heal. She strikes me to be the same way to some extent because of her zealousness. Any ideas?
