An ongoing study being done for the U.S. military by the Food and Drug Administration showed that most samples of ibuprofen (the active ingredient in Advil and Motrin), acetaminophen (Tylenol, Anacin-3), aspirin (Bufferin, Bayer), or acetaminophen and aspirin combined (Excedrin) stored under proper conditions were still good for at least three years after the expiration date on the packaging. Worst Case: You won't get rid of your aches and pains. "When these medicines lose their effectiveness, in general you do not have to worry about them turning into anything dangerous," says Dana Simpler, a primary-care physician in Baltimore.
