Ah yes, the dream within a dream. That's called a lucid dream. Some ppl have those but I've never had one. I used to have nightmares but don't any more. I don't even remember my dreams anymore. Everyone dreams. The dream cycle comes around every hour-and-a-half during sleep time. Of course, I could leave a suggest to mySelf (out loud so my ears can hear) to remember my dreams but they're not terribly exciting when I do that. Something I usually do every night is remember something nice that happened during the day and then I go peacefully off to sleep with a smile on my face. - Edith

Must be nice... I have the worst of my nightmares when I go to sleep feeling comfortable, or 'safe'. That's when things impact me the most-- when all seems well in the world, I guess I need to be smacked back to reality. It is very difficult to be positive, even when things are going well, am I the only one who is ALWAYS waiting for the other shoe to drop out of the 10 legged sky???? Guest guest
Ahhh.. so that's what that is called... Sometimes I am pretty ignorant for a smart person. I'm not good at all with names and labels. I can explain something and forget what to call it. I always hated True/False or Fill in the Blank... As for me - Give me an essay test - or give me a B... I actually don't have a lot of nightmares. They seem to come and go. It seems like I mostly have them when I am processing a lot of stuff...and they usually seem to have some pretty strong messages (that are often hard to figure out). I don't remember most dreams. or more likely - I might remember a part of a dream during the day when something happens to remind me - but the rest of the dream escapes me.. I like the dreams where I sort things out somehow... I have even been kind of aware that I AM sorting - but it is nice when the sorting gets FINISHED before I wake up. It just feels so nice to wake up with things sorted out like that. I don't even know WHAT was sorted out most of the time - I only know THAt it was. I have dreamed of people or places - and then recognized them later in real life. That is strange. I never could understand, though, why the mind has to speak in such riddles in dreams. For instance - I went to stay with my sister for a week right after her husband died. One night I started dreaming someone was saying " Dalmer is dining on Ricks sweetest. " ... it was SO weird - it woke me up - I tried to go back to sleep but that thought would NOT leave my head. Then I thought - Ricks Sweetest. My sister's husband's name was Rick. Hmmm.. Dalmer is dining on my sister.... Then it FINALLY clicked!!! SOMETHING IS EATING MY SISTER!!!! So I ran downstairs - and she was sleeping in front of the TV. The TV had people crying and screaming " He's Dead!! He's Dead!! " - which probably wasn't real nice for my sister to be hearing while she slept at the moment. So I turned off the TV.. and went back to bed. But why couldn't my mind just said " Get up and turn off the TV? " Why all the puzzles and guessing games?? Dalmer is dining....Geez! I like the idea of thinking of nice things right before going to sleep. I used to do that with my son... but had forgotten about doing that for me now. The time I like the most is the - what my friend and I call - betwixt and between time. Right before you drift off to sleep - and right as you come out of sleeping... when all those wonderful insights that you never can remember later come to you - and for a moment in time everything fits - just so..If you can hover there for awhile - it's really nice. Guest guest
> Ah yes, the dream within a dream. That's called a lucid dream. I keep a voice recorder by the bedside, so I can record dreams when I wake up. I transcribe them to discuss with my therapist. I have had a number of lucid dreams - including several where I dreamed that I woke up and recorded the dream, but I was actually still dreaming. Another frequent dream involves peeing at great length, without ever finishing. Then I wake up because I have to pee. I don't think that dreams like that have any deep symbolic meaning. - Dan
Guest guest
I used to have tons of nightmares, but they've lessened over the years. Since joining this list, my tidal wave and tornado dreams have become less frequent. I have lucid dreams, and those are fun... except, I've had two night terrors in my lifetime - they're essentially nightmares that you can't wake out of right away, so you're half-awake and still dreaming - those are terrifying (hence the term " night terrors " ). I respect my dreams, though, because I find that sometimes they tell me more about my mental/emotional state than I admit to in my waking life. Hmm.. I dream less these days.. is it because I express myself more freely? > > > ... And then I DREAMED I woke up...and it was still > > going on. Of course, I was still sleeping.
