V_ _________________________________________________-- Vicki, The higher carb is probably your culprit on weight loss. If given the option for losing the higher fat but lower carbs are going to give us better results weight wise. Any Carbs are easily turned in to sugar in the digestive tract. Carbs start digesting in the mouth when mixed with Salvia. Carbs break to simple sugars and sugars are used for energy. Any excess sugars are easily stored to fat reserves. It takes more calories to burn fat and proteins. The body uses sugars and carbs for energy first because it takes less effort to digest them and they are a source of easy energy. Because it takes more time and energy to break down fats we mal absorb a higher proportion of them. So as far as losing weight a high carb and low fat diet is not the best option for weight loss for us. That is why Dr K's office tells us to get our protein in and limit carbs. We all know what the increased fats do so lean meats are the best option. On this same note, read labels. Products that take away fats often use sugars or other high carb options to replace the flavors in the food. I have an Aunt who stayed on a low fat diet for over a year and bragged about how easy it was and healthy. When I finally got through to her, She realized that if you eat a whole box of low fat cookies, or a 1/2 a jar of jelly(No fat in that either) you are still getting calories. Weight loss happens when you burn more calories than you absorb(In a normal person that they eat) So you can basically have a 0 fat diet and still take in 1000's of calories in sugars and carbs. At some point in our life we hit a balance with this surgery where the amount and type of foods we eat stalls the weight loss. In other words, to continue losing weight we either have to alter our habits and eat less calories (or more foods we mal absorb), and deny our bodies the simple carbs and sugars that are stalling the losses, or significantly increase our expenditure of calories(easy more exercise!) I am stalled at 210 lbs. That means my body has found a happy place, where what I eat and what I do equals a balance. Meaning I neither gain or lose weight. I have fibro and a bad back and keep saying I am going to walk more to help losses, but getting around to doing it is another thing so I am either going to have to cut my intake or finally get my lazy A$$ up and start moving to lose more. Does this help Vicki? No one has the secret to weight loss in their heads out here. I was a nurse for 20 yrs. I could tell people in my sleep how to diet and what kinds of diets and how to do them. Still I was MO. Doing and knowing is two different things. I am planning to try a moderate fat high protein low carb diet in the next few weeks. (As soon as I get my kid graduated...LOL) Maybe it will help my bowel issues. It will be interesting to see if it stimulates my losses again. If I can get my act in gear!
