Hi

I've recently experimented with Flax & yr post prompted me to write some of

my observations....so here I go ...

has been on 4 caps of Eye-Q ( 2 am / 2 pm) per day & I'd felt she'd

plateaued - had so for quite abit. Awhile ago I found a bottle of

NaturesAid Flaxseed oil ( cold pressed) capsules & nabbed it ( hadn't seen

the capsule form at all - only oil).

I waited to check out the vitamin e content & once established ( I'll paste

the makers email about that below) started to give 1 cap with her Eye Q

caps.

That was two weeks ago & have been genuinely surprised by the reaction that

people have spontaneously given me since then.

A teacher gleefully told me .......' oh she came up to me in the corridor &

started to tell me about something etc ' Initiation was unheard of before.

Her computer tutor - ....' a round of applause please for - amazing

concentration today - she got 8/10 on the sequencing test - whatever it is

you're doing with don't change it!' ( she beat the 3 other older boys

in her class twice her age - and an adult does really well to get 10/10

apparently ) .

Her Conductor at her Saturday Dyspraxic school ....' she worked really

well - her attention to instructions has really taken off'

Personally I haven't noticed any change in her articulation but must say she

is 'chatty' - this was very haphazard before - unusual for her to

spontaneously think up a topic & initiate a conversation. Before if she was

chatty - it was observational only. This is definately different now - more

expanded & theoretical even!

I'd wanted to try flax just to up her ALA intake & see what might happen &

have really been pleasantly surprised. It was an experiment to see if she

could convert them into DHA, EPA & GLA & maybe she seems to be doing it. I

didn't think this would happen as I thought the problem with our kids is

that they haven't been able to use ALAs & LA in their basic diet & convert

them to begin with. That said I'm still not sure about taking it (flax) on

its own - our Specialist Speech Therapist has always advocated flax oil as

she is vegan (however these caps have gelatin) but I'm not so sure myself.

Below is the nutritional breakdown for NaturesAid Flaxseed caps followed by

Eye-Qs stuff. The Vit E info is right at the bottom :

Flaxseed Oil Per cap/1000mg:

58% Alpha Linolenic Acid (omega 3)

15% Linolenic Acid (omega 6)

17% Oleic Acid (omega 9)

remaining 10% comprising carob powder, glycerin, gelatin, Nat Vit E

EyeQ per 2 caps daily intake:

Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) 186mg

Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) 58mg

Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) 20mg

Natural Vit E 3.2mg (32% RDA)

From NaturesAid:.............................'regarding your concerns about

Vitamin E over-dosage when increasing the number of Flaxseed Oil capsules

your daughter takes to two. When filled, each capsule is enriched with 2mg

of 1000iu (international units) per gram of D-alpha tocopherol. This is the

equivalent of 1.34mg of Vitamin E. The adult RDA (recommended daily

allowance) for Vitamin E is 10mg per day and it is considered safe up to

levels of 800mg per day. The RDA for a child over 4 is the same as for

adults and although no figures are available for the upper safe level in

children, given the considerable margin of safety for adults, it appears

reasonable to assume that 2 capsules would not represent a danger from

Vitamin E.'

Instead of doing one tablespoon at one time, try breaking it up into

3 - 1 teaspoon servings. Then you might not taste it as much.

For lunch I always take leftover chicken to work. I drizzle 1t of

oil over it before I microwave it. That way it doesn't dry out when

reheating it. It tastes great this way.

If you're going to use it ground, buy it whole and use a coffee grinder to

grind it as you need it (I grind 2 or 3 days worth at a time - and use the

whole seeds in salads, too.

> Whole first ground second

Does it drag out as much intestinal " debris " as psyllium does? I

mean, does it pull all the old gunk out of the little pockets?

Psyllium was recommended to me for a gentle bowel cleanse,

but I've read on this list that Type O's respond better to Flax.

Many thanks!

Whole seeds will pass thru untouched unless you should happen to crunch a few on

the way - flaxseeds/linseeds need to be cracked before eaten to get the oil -

and I think I'd do it daily also.

To make you go to the bathroom, you don't chew the seed. That is the

whole idea.

Flax is good for EFAs, but it is not the most absorbable type. I used

it with great success tho.

>>how

> about oranges?

My son did not tolerate oranges because of his lutein/carotene issue.

Oranges are high phenol also, and feed yeast. But if your child

tolerates them and does not have an excessive yeast issue, they are

good for the vitamin C.

Hi Kirk,

Probably not much omega 3s left after sprouting. Just guessing. I should

probably also tell everyone that flax sprouts don't taste that great. The

cow loves them.

I believe that flax seed needs to be cooked before eating, to detoxify

certain compounds in it.

Golden flax tastes much better to me than the brown flax. I never

try to grind flax weth my teeth, I use my vitamix blender on the dry

seeds.

Yes, I sometimes put coconut oil in the smoothies, too. You can't really

taste it, or the flax. I just grind the dry brown flax in a coffee grinder

before adding it. I usually add a big helping of some kind of greens, too,

or a couple of zucchinis. We can't taste this, either. :o)

if you don't grind the flax your body just passes it through , you must grind it

and should do it daily or at most only a couple days at a time as the oil is

released when it is ground thus saving you alot of money instead of buying flax

oil and it doesn't go rancid untik after it's ground and not used within a a

couple days .. you get the oil and the roughage this way .

--------- [lists] Re: Hi Blood sugars

Brown flax is not for humans? I'd be interested to read your research about

that. Never heard that, I grind my own brown flax seeds and use them in

smoothies all the time.

By cutting carbs, do you mean you're cutting mainly white carbs, or veggies,

too? Cutting carbs may keep blood sugar low, but a truly healthy diet has

got to include mostly raw fruits and veggies. I've read about diabetics

starting a completely RAW fruit, veggie, and grain diet, and being cured

within a few weeks.

Hi

I've never heard that about brown flax either. Where is this info coming

I use a coffee grinder for mine - grinds it easily.

Dear Sheri,

When I take flax, I feel bloating and other symptoms related to elevated

estrogen. Also, I am seeing a nutritionist, and he concurred that, in some

people who are sensitive, flax affects their estrogen levels.

I'm not sure of the explanation, I just pay a lot of attention to my body,

and try to always figure out cause and effect, which can be quite complicated

considering all of the supplements I take.
