emailed us that he now has to report our vacation days to the bean counters. If

Hi Ben,

I would suggest taking a basic billing

class. Cross Country Education has some good ones. The few hundred

dollars that it will cost you will be well worth it in the long run. Our

local HMO contractor (IPA) offers a basic billing class for free that is also

good. Sometimes the local Medical Association will offer them also.

If you really want to learn it, the best reference book to get yourself is a

set of CPT and ICD-9 books. If your office does a lot of procedures, a

HCPCS book would be good, too. If you want to start with just one, go for

the CPT book. Totally dry reading, but is the actual reference book for

billing. The AMA has other books available by specialty. And of

course your local Medicare carrier will have all of the “extra”

rules that you need to abide by (like what ICD-9 codes you can use for specific

CPT codes).

Whatever you do, don’t do an online

course. I have an MA who decided that it would be a good idea to become a

“certified Medical Biller” – total waste of time. Of

course she didn’t ask me before she plunked down the $1500. Live

and learn…
