Pat, do you know if CLASS also applies to kids with aspergers or pdd-nos?

Thanks!

I'm not really sure what Class is; I just know that my daughter-in-law was on a waiting list for it for several years before she got it for Karac. I think it may be state money for autistic kids. It basicly pays for anything that helps Karac, i.e. Equest, respite, special needs camp, music therapy, swimming lessons, etc. It even pays me for after school care. Isn't that something? I'm even paid for taking care of my own grandchild!! However, the money I get just helps pay for his clothes, gymnastics, and the therapists I hire to work with him. Wow thats wonderful that he has such a loving grandma and all those

great opportunities. We dont have anything like that in Wisconsin. There

is respite, but in my area there are only 2 people that are willing to

work with autistic kids and I get respite like once every 4 months. If

you can find somone to do it and they get certified that would work to,

but I donnt have any family members that are willing to go through the

ceritifcation prcess. I guess they get 50 bucks for an overnight?

In AR this is also handled through the waiver program and we do not have anyone that cares enough to help. We have not seen a movie in 5 years nor slept in our own bed alone. My son will not sleep by himself and screams and wakes up through the night as is sleeping with us I couldn't imagine by himself! lol Allie I know your pain! ha ha ha But I find this a reocurring theme with the autie parents. That no one has time alone maybe also bc we don't trust anyone enough? I don't know but I do need some cabana boys right now to bring me a huge drink by the beach that's for sure! lol

Happy Easter

Well, Allie, I don't know how you do it. I don't think I could do it by myself, but I guess we do what we have to do, and these children are so precious. blessings, Pat K************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

Alena, can't you find college students and train them? I have a 22 year old male college graduate who helps me with Karac on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. He does as well as some of the ABA trained therapists that I have had. Pat K************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.

I think we worry about our kids more because they have been handled

insensitively by people and have been hurt. My son is way more reactive

now because of horrors he experienced at school. I am afraid for him and

I think that I need to be in control and am afraid peole will not be as

conscientious (sp) as I am and this could send him into a horrible

spiral that would affect his life. (This has already happened at school,

several times) thats why we homeschool! When my son is 1:1 with just an

adult he is usually not a problem. He likes to be " busy " but thats good,

better than glued to the TV. He is really good with my mom. My dad tries

but they tend to aggravate eachother. His dad and he dont click at all!

They can go to a movie, play with the dog and go to Best buy or wally

world, after that they annoy the heck out of eachother. The 3-4 times a

year he does this :S I appreciate the break. To me sitting in the

waiting room while he is in counseling every week is my down time ( I

work on my crafts or scrapbooking then) I know my life is way too

exciting.

I agree that treating the child as normal as possible is a good thing,

but the child will not ever become normal. I tried spanking with my

son and it was a pure waste of time. First of all I don't think he had

a clue that spanking was a form of punishment. And I don't think he

had the ability to understand exactly why I was doing it. And he

didn't feel it, at least not as far as discomfort goes... he doesn't

feel pain like normal people.

When Blake was 3 he would get up early in the morning before anyone

else and get into the boxes of cereal. And every morning when I woke

up that box of cereal would be all over the floor from one end of the

house to the other. Eevry day I would tell him that to do this was bad

and I spanked him for it. And everyday he did it again. Even hiding

the cereal didn't work cause the lil squirt found it everytime.

Anyway.. this went on for a year and the spanking just had no effect.

As Blake got older he would just laugh when I attempted to spank

him... I say attempted because it was difficult to catch him. I think

he thought it was all a game.

There are better ways to deal with discipline than spanking. It takes

a lot of trial and error. But remember that these kids often don't

understand exactly what it is they did wrong.... if they realize they

did do anything wrong. We have to take the time to try and explain it

to them the best way we can.

I am thankful that I never spanked Karac. He is now 14 and bigger than I am; If I had hit him when he was smaller, he might think it was ok to hit me now that I am the smaller one.LOL, Pat K ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
