Hello all. I was wondering if any of you have the Resistance

Training Specialist (RTS) course entitled " The Essentials of

Resistance Training: The Basic Training Video Series. " It's now

offered on DVD and I am considering buying it.

I have the book, " Joint Structure and Function: A Comprehensive

Analysis " by Norkin and Levangie which is quite detailed when it

comes to Kinesiology texts. Does this RTS course offer anything

beyond what a sound book on the subject does?

Specifically, how does it show the relationships between the

components of the musculoskeletal system? Still pictures?

Animation? Cadaver photos? Sketches? Also, does it cover practical

application in depth with examples of specific exercises?

I suppose that I am envisioning a product that combines the technical

information of a top-shelf Clinical Kinesiology text with Stuart

Mc's " Insider's Tell-all Guide to Weight Training Technique "

book--but in video form.

If anyone can offer some insight of any kind it would be much

appreciated.

Thanks,

The Basic Training video series is a fine starting point/refresher

course of learning basic skeletal-muscular anatomy, a bit of

biomechanics and some good ol' physiology all at once. Tom Purvis has

always been one of my favorite presenters, dispite the Bowflex

commercials (in fact you'll hear him state some things that are exact

contradictions to what he states in the commercials), and he is a

natural teacher. The info is good, especially the anatomy, but the

actual weight training biomechanics section wasn't enough for me (in

fact Tom is famous for teaching the 90 degree chest press, which many

of us powerlifters have to sort of guffaw at). My only other

complaint would be that the earlier biomechanics section, which starts

to delve into moment arms and joint angles, doesn't pan out into

anything productive later in the series.

Will it go into more depth then Joint Structure and Function? Perhaps

the depth is not there, but the information is presented in a way that

sinks in a bit more. Plus Tom discusses practical apllication of the

info, the 'whys' behind why we should know this, and some of his

wisdom can be a good lesson that the mentioned book can't provide.

I recommend the series.
