I highly recommend one of those ionic air purifiers. I have one in my

facility and it works incredibly well at getting rid of the odors you speak

of.

Does the gym have central air? What does the gym do

for ventilation? Knock out a wall and get some

windows. All gyms need to have a source of fresh air.

Try some sort of commercially available cleaner that

smells good.

Are you sure that's a bad thing? Some of the smells in " old " gyms can be

nasty.

Try using an ozone generator. You may be able to rent one. If not, once a new

gym becomes an old gym you may still want it.

I can't recommend a particular brand. Here's a link to one supplier so you can

get an idea of what it is: http://www.air-zone.com/main.html

Good luck.

New Gym Smell

Hi all Supertrainers,

The local weightlifting club I'm in has just

shifted to a new location. Problem is, it's got a very strong and very toxic

" new gym " smell. Its got some kind of black rubber flooring under the

lifting platforms, glued to the cement ground. I tried using one of those

giant fans to blow everything away, but the smell comes back with a

vengeance the next day. I also tried scattering ammonia smelling salts all

over the place. Also tried wiping down the whole place with white

vinegar..... The Gym has no windows, just one small exhaust fan. Does anyone

have any idea how to get rid of the smell?

For once, a topic on which I'm an authority!

Lemon-scented cleaners will take care of the rubbery smell.

That was kind of anticlimactic!

Time, time, and more time.

The glue probably has some form of alcohol base to aid in drying but

it still takes time until the glue cures fully. Rubber mats also

have a wonderful smell ;) the high humidity in Singapore doesn't help

matters either. If you only have an exhaust, then use extra fans to

pull in as much fresh air as possible.

If you have more than one door to the exterior (so people can

enter/exit)--then you can fashion a duct with the fan (facing

inward), duct tape, and trash bags to create a seal from the doorway

to the fan circumference. This is of course temporary (don't know

what your fire codes have to say). The concept is to create a

balance between the intake of fresh air and exhaust of the fumes

(circulation).

Hopefully the ideas above will inspire a successful resolution. What

ever you come up with—good luck.

Try doing a web search for ozone generators. Air Tiger is one model I'm

familiar with, from Rambridge Structure and Design Ltd, (Canada). I have also

purchased a Surround Air Purifier, also an ozone generator, for my bedroom.

Ozone generators seem to be considerably less expensive than HEPA air purifiers,

and much quieter. Be sure to investigate thoroughly for the best price, as

well as the manufacturers' claims.
