I remember our doctor mentioning that my son could go as long as 2 weeks out of cast if necessary. Of course, by that point his curve was pretty mild.

time out of cast

Hi Everyone,I need some advice. Keira is rapidly out-growing her cast. She isn't scheduled for another cast for 4 weeks. When I talked to SLC this morning, the care coordinator said that it sounded like the cast needed to come off, however, the surgeon is gone until the week that we are scheduled for the new cast. The care coordinator said she would contact the surgeon and see if he thinks cutting the cast off and waiting for 4 weeks is ok.I know that some surgeons allow 1 week break. Have any of you gone longer than 1 week? Has the curve progressed? Thanks,Liz on

HI Liz,

Hadley just had her cast off not too long ago, but only for 1 wk. I have heard of a lot of mom's saying that they had their child's cast off for up to 4 wks because of vacations or sicknesses and have had no problems.

BUt personally, i would not have Hadley's cast off for more than a wk. Even with the one wk she did have it off, I noticed her back gong back to her C curve especially towards the end of that wk. Also, she was in pain from her curve relaxing to it's normal position. I didnt know what was going on with her, but when i called the nurse, she said she could be very sore from all this... so i gave her tylenol and that helped. I think i would be too scared to have her cast off for more than a wk. I wouldnt want to lose any correction.

I think though if your child absolutely needs her cast off because it is hurting her, causing problems, etc, then its impt to take it off.

Hope this helps, but sorry if it confuses you more!

The longest Sophia was out of cast was 12 days. We have been told up to 2 weeks is probably fine (by more than one casting doc), but no one said anything good or bad about going beyond that. I think it would depend on their rate of growth and if they hit a growth spurt while out of cast or not. Is there another doc that might be able to step in and recast her sooner? Hope it all works out OK for you. I know it is nerve racking. We had to cut Sophia's off early three times, but luckily we were always able to get her an OR slot within a week or so of removing it.

Please keep us posted.

Wow liz..4 weeks scares me!. When Noelle was out of cast the first time, she was at 13 the first day and then up to 15 the next.... I don't know of anyone who was out of cast that long.... How is Keira doing in the cast? Is she vomiting, constipated, etc? Are there any other casting docs at that hospital who could fill in? Keep us posted... Steph
