Was wondering if anyone of you is actually taking Kineret (injections)

versus MTX? My doctor is trying to get me on this shot which is

supposedly better than MTX but I hate having shots. Is it worth it? I

really don't mind taking the pills once a week versus injecting myself

several times a week. My insurance doesn't even cover it.

Help.

I loved Kineret while I was on it and was able to wean off mtx and prednisone.

I am now on Rituxan IV infusions and not having results as good as I did on

Kineret, but I am not suffering the continuous infections.

Hope this helps

Emilinda,

I am taking both the kineret injections everyday and the methotrexate

pills (6 pills) on Sunday.

My shot I think I am allergic to because I am itching like crazy..but I hear

that is a common

side affect for a couple of weeks. The itching is less intense now. It is

supposed to be expensive but I am lucky, my insurance does cover it. I would try

it if I were you. Everyone is different so maybe it will help you greatly!. Talk

it over with your Dr.  Also, there was a program from the kineret makers that

assist you in the payment of the drug, you can look into that too. I can give

you the 1-800 # if you want and you can ask them about it.

Hello Emelinda,

I have been taking Kineret for one month now. Like you, I was

recently diagnosed. My doctor wanted me to try Kineret as soon as I

was out of the hospital and stabilized on a high dose of prednisone.

For me, the Kineret has worked extremely well so far. Within a few

minutes of taking the first shot I felt better, and this has continued

since then. I was a little scared of giving myself shots, but the

nurse showed me how to do it, and I quickly realized that it's just a

series of simple steps that I could learn. Most days I feel no pain

at all while giving myself the shot, although that's not always true.

My doctor predicted that the insurance company would refuse to cover

Kineret, but he explained that he was prepared for that, and we would

just go through the company's appeals procedure. He said he had done

this before, and that in the other cases the insurance company had

agreed that if he could provide three peer-reviewed studies showing

that Kineret is effective for Still's disease, they would cover it.

It turned out that we did not have to go through the appeals process

after all (that's another story), but this is just to let you know

that this doctor seemed to know the ropes of the process, and this was

how he planned to handle it. He indicated that he would have no

problem providing the studies showing that Kineret is effective for

Still's.

I wish you good luck in working out the insurance situation and

deciding whether to try this medicine, and with getting your life back

in general.
