Hi Sally,

Here's the scoop. A couple of years ago, our charity started receiving

calls from parents who'd spotted an article bout specialist surfing

instructors in the US who taught children with autism. We looked into the

UK possibilities and found that none existed. So last year, we invited a

group of them to come to Devon to start things up here. We had specialist

surf boards (12-feet -- big enough for 2 adults to stand on) made, and 4

American surfers flew over from the States. First they taught a number of

instructors their specialist techniques and the next day, we held an all

day " surfari " for children with autism and their families. It was so

successful, we're making it an annual event. The American guys had so much

fun, they're also trying to get things going in other parts of the

country. The only location that's confirmed so far, however, is in Devon,

and will occur on Saturday 13th September at Bigbury-on-Sea (nr.

Kingsbridge).

The event/Breaking the Barrier:

The event is free and includes surfing lessons for children with autism

from age 4 to 18 from 9am until 5pm. Siblings may also sign up even if

they aren't autistic. We hope it's an opportunity to families to enjoy a

day out together on the beach. Besides the surfing (which includes loan of

surfboards and wetsuits), the day also includes free lunch for all

participating families. If we raise enough funds, we'll also have a free

" after-surf " barbecue.

How to sign up: First by contact me with your interest, names of children,

birthdates and contact details (parent/carer names, address, phone, email,

etc). Your kids will then be added to our registration database and you

can consider yourselves signed up. Some time around July-August, I'll post

you a registration form, which requests more specific information about

your children's health -- basically for risk assessment purposes. Soon

thereafter, you'll get a notification of lesson times and assigned

instructor.

And that's that, followed by what we hope will be a spectacular day out!

So... please do let me have all your info and I'll add you to our list!

Any more questions, please don't hesitate to either drop me an email or

call on 01803 840744. By the way, pictures from 2007 can be found on our

website

All the best,

Lis
