Hi Mackenzie,

I also heard that KT was not great for pregnant women. But I have also read

that if used for a time before pregnancy and you are used to it, it is fine to

continue. Hopefully someone can give you a more definitive answer.

Are you there Margret?

Subject: Safety

I posted on FB that I was excited about brewing my first batch of Kombucha and I

had someone tell me that homemade Kombucha was not safe for pregnant women or

children. In all of my research I have not found this to be true. I know to do

everything very clean and sanitized and watch for mold. Is there something else

that I should know? I am confident in my preparation method that all was done

clean/sanitary, so is there anything to worry about? I am not brewing new

plants and we don't smoke- at all. There are NO toxic chemicals in our home- at

all. I clean with vinegar and baking soda... So fill me in. Am I just getting

info from someone who isn't in the know about how to properly handle and brew

Kombucha or is there something to what they said?

Also, how long will it take for the kombucha to be fizzy? I like mine a touch

sweeter than sour and quite effervescent, like GT's.

I can't imagine that there would be any more risk to a pregnant woman than a

nonpregnant woman. I wonder if it isn't our overly cautious society though

maybe it has to do w/ the release of toxins? But that's a concern w/o being

preg and the panacea is to drink lots of water, which isn't it better to flush

out the toxins in a woman's blood for a fetus anyway?

I believe it probably has to do w/ the sanitation factor, which is a concern for

my sister who has an auto-immune disorder also. If you are very careful about

sanitation, I don't think it's a risk. My $.02.

Yes, Kathe, that is probably the best advice.

I would add to this : Please remember that Kombucha is NOT a drug, but a

wonderfully balancing probiotic food which is good for any human at any

stage of life.

As with any other food there is the possibility that your body could say

'No, not at the moment', as there may be food incompatibilities

At the same time, exercising common sense, which has become very uncommon

these days ;-) I am fed up of some forever seeing monsters on the horizon.

One should save that attitude for a lot of the stuff the docs want to

prescribe you, especially antibiotics, which should only be a last resort.

> Hopefully someone can give you a more definitive answer.

In one sense, there cannot be a definite answer, because not everyone

reacts to new food, e.g. Kombucha in the same way.

So, from the old six-childrened Momma who has fed herself and her family

with countless brews over the years in pregnancy and out of it :

We only ever experienced Kombucha in a healing way (same with Kefir!)!

To a new situation which makes me fearful I apply the wonderful

Word: Chazak, chazak, ve'ematz = Hebrew for

'Be strong, be strong and very courageous'.

So, don't fear the fearmongers, go and enjoy the best of life!

Margret:-)
