Guest guest
Hi Anita I think the workshop will mostly be about the theory of RDI and how it works, rather than the nitty gritty of 'RDI in action'. I think you would probably get more about RDI in action at a parent training...........but there has never been a parent training delivered in the UK so far, they all take place in the States From a personal perspective, we didnt really understand the nitty gritty of it when we first started implementing it - we understood the theory (and all the research behind the development of the programme) and this made us confident that it would work on flexible thinking. We just trusted our Consultant and did what she told us, even when it felt a bit odd (eg why chant when you are doing activities...I felt such a prat). Eventually the light went on and we now understand everything that we are doing (you chant to increase opportunities for emotional coordination and to allow you to alter the pace of the interaction).....my first breakthrough with emotional coordination was whilst doing a chant and looking at the footage of it still brings a tear to my eye. I think the nitty gritty of RDI is really hard to understand until you are actually in it.....and I have heard other parents say similar things about it. I dont know whether that helps you but it is the only way I am able to answer your question.........if you want to know more about nitty gritty of RDI, there are lots of practising parents (lordy it sounds like a form of contraception!!) on the RDI-UK list, as well as Consultants and I'm sure people would be happy to answer questions and share experiences. http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/RDI-UK/ RDI has transformed our household. Gone is the sulky angry oppositional little boy who was experiencing continual frustration from breakdowns in communication, gone are the frequent meltdowns, gone are the parental feelings of desperation and now we have a happy little boy who is feeling competent about managing mistakes, who actually asks to do chores (most of our RDI activity has been around chores) and who gets off his Playstation to play happily and productively (for short-ish periods) with his little brother. We still have a long, long way to go and it has been very hard work for us (we have had 2 tribunals and a serious family illness during this time) but it has been so worth it and we can now look to the future with hope. Guest guest
Hi Anita, We have been doing RDI for a few months now. I have booked to go to the workshop in London. I'm just going to treat it as a refresher but expect to learn quite a lot too. Jane RDI workshop in London I am thinking of attending the RDI workshop in London in May, but I am a bit worried after looking at the ppt of it that I found on the RDI website that it might be a bit too introductory and not enough "nuts and bolts" of doing RDI. If anyone has atttended this workshop could they please give me some feedback on its value? Thanks so much,Anita
Guest guest
Thanks Zoe. I was hoping you'd answer as I'd read your fabulous article in the Autism File--congratulations on that :-) I'd looked into RDI before but it just seemed way, way beyond my son. Now I am inspired to look more deeply. Even if I cannot use it now, I'm sure it will be helpful some time in the future (the near future I hope!). I'm going to do my best to be at the conference. Guest guest
Thanks Jane. I hope to see you there. Perhaps you won't mind if I ask you a whole bunch of annoying questions and pick your brain :-) Anita > > Hi Anita, > > We have been doing RDI for a few months now. Guest guest
Hi Jane, don’t know if I replied to this but a friend of a friend is looking for a hotel. I’ll let you know as soon as we find it so we can all meet up. -----Original Message----- From: Autism-Biomedical-Europe [mailto:Autism-Biomedical-Europe ] On Behalf Of Jane Hogan Sent: 05 March 2008 17:57 To: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Subject: Re: Re: RDI workshop in London Hi, Can you let me know too. I am going with one of the girls of 's team (possibly two). Haven't got a clue where to stay. Jane Re: RDI workshop in London I'd like to know too Sara. Maybe we could make some arrangements? Guest guest
Just a thought - I have stayed in YWCA or YHA accommodation in the past on overnighters like this - if there were a few of you you may even be able to get your own room. It would be considerably cheaper than hotels. Zoe x > > > > Where are people staying? Sara >
Guest guest
Hi, Does anyone know which hotel the workshop is being held in? Jane RE: Re: RDI workshop in London Yes, I suppose most people will be going with their spouse or someone else but I’m going on my own. I’ll look into it. -----Original Message-----From: Autism-Biomedical-Europe [mailto:Autism-Biomedical-Europe ] On Behalf Of AnitaSent: 05 March 2008 15:37To: Autism-Biomedical-Europe Subject: Re: RDI workshop in London I'd like to know too Sara. Guest guest
Jane I think the workshop is being held at the Institute of Child Health. It will be on the C Centre web site. Zoe > > > > Where are people staying? Sara >
Guest guest
Thanks Zoe, Just had a look - sure it wasn't posted when I booked. Probably just me! I see there will be presentation on research results on quality of life. How are you travelling down? Guest guest
Zoe If you the workshop and then decide to do a programme with a consultant, does it cost the same as a classic ABA programme or is it more the parents who do the work? A friend and I are considering doing the workshop but wondered what the financial costs would be after the course. > > > > > > Where are people staying? Guest guest
Hi , I’m not Zoe but a consultant seems to cost between £3,000 to £6,000 a year depending on the package or how often you want to see them or whatever their particular arrangement is. you also pay I think £250 ish a year to sign up to their new internet system. There are no therapists – the parents are the therapists, so that’s the total cost. The cost of any workshops is in addition to the above.
