Donna said " I am so embarrassed by this disease, that I would never even

consider going swimming (have to be barefoot) boating, walking on the

beach..etc. So if anyone has any tips on how to get beyond the embarrassment of

having severely deformed feet and being able to tell someone that, I would love

to know. I am so afraid of someone just saying " yuck " and walking away,

therefore further knocking down my self esteem, that I would just assume try

and keep it a secret

from a man. "

Donna, I don't have CMT, my husband does, and I go to water aerobics 4 to 6

times a week. I hate to let you in on a little secret, but I am not bothering

to look at your feet and say yuck because I am so worried about what everyone

is going to think about my big, fat beer barrel stomach. Seriously there isn't

anyone at water aerobics who doesn't have some yuck factor, but none of us is

that important that anyone really gives a damn. I have made many friends in

this activity and improved my conditioning.

As to AFOs my husband's first set made by the orthotist recommended by UCLA

never fit right. He took them back to be adjusted countless times. They were

molded plastic. His latest set made by the orthotist recommended by Santa

Barbara MDA doctor are the old-fashioned metal kind. I think they are more

comfortable because they touch in fewer places. Don't accept ones that don't

fit right as you will never wear them. Get them early as postponing makes you

more deformed and harder to fit.
