Guest guest
HELLO EVERYONE I HAVE BEEN READING MORE AND MORE ABOUT KEFIR. MY SON IS EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO MILK; I AM SO AFRAID OF INTRODUCING IT AND HAVING A VERY BAD REACTION (IT COULD PUT HIM REALLY BACK FROM BOWEL RECOVERY). HAVE ANY OF YOU WHO ARE USING IT WITH THEIR CHILDREN (WHOSE CHILDREN HAVE MILK SENSITIVIES) HAS HAD ANY SORT OF PROBLEMS. I CAN NOT USE COCONUT MILK AS HE TESTED SENSITIVE TO IT, AS WELL. I AM MOST KEEN TO HEAR FROM EVERYONE EXPERIENCE ON THIS MATTER. THANKS VILMA
Guest guest
Hi Vilma, Eddie had head-to-toe eczema with cow's milk formula supplement as a baby but is great with raw goat milk kefir (but not coconut). BUT we only tried the goat milk when we were desperate to find any food he wasn't allergic to. It's really important to go with your instincts. I think I'd try an alternative - not milk or coconut. You could always try goat milk later if you wanted. Dom's web page (the main internet expert on kefir) lists some alternatives here http://users.sa.chariot.net.au/~dna/kefirpage.html#more_uses_for_kefir like grape juice and cabbage (like sauerkraut) I'm sure Tim has found others too - I'll get him to look at this thread. Best wishes, Sandy > > HELLO EVERYONE > > I HAVE BEEN READING MORE AND MORE ABOUT KEFIR. Guest guest
Hi Vilma, In "Wild Fermentation", Sandor Katz talks about kefirs made from all sorts of alternatives to milk: "You can kefir fruit or vegetable juice, or water with any sweetener you like, or rice milk, soymilk, or nut milk." ... "Whatever the medium, the grains seem to transform it, though they do not rapidly multiply as they do in milk." - (Katz, S. "Wild Fermentation", 2003, Chelsea Green Publishing) Coloured juices will dye the grains but otherwise there doesn't seem to be any limit on the possibilities! Guest guest
Hi , That's interesting. I just searched a little on cobalt deficiency symptoms which I read are similar to B12 eg http://www.healthcatchers.com/cobalt.html Apparently liver is a good source too. We all have organic liver (lamb and cow presoaked in lemon) at regular intervals. It's another thing that we think generally helps. Guest guest
I've always been worried about liver because of its role in detoxing the body. However I hadn't thought of organic liver. What a wonderful idea. It also has the important Copper and Vitamin D, the latter of course dependent on the intensity of sunshine in our not so sunny climes. I am interested in the fact that cobalt helps with glucose entry into the cell. Didn't know that before. I am looking for anything which may help my sugar metabolism. Hmm I have a great recipe for pate de foie ( brandy based!) so I shall have a look in the next few days for a good source of organic. Thanks for the tip. Re: KEFIR - MILK SENSIVITIES???? Guest guest
> > > Thank you very much indeed, Tim and Sandy for the information you posted. I will be trying to do Rice Milk Kefir (it is naturally sweet) and maybe Kefir apple juice ice lollies - I hope it works. According to what I read I should expect to wait for longer than 24 hours for fermentation if I do not use dairy, shouldn't I? Thank you very much. Guest guest
Hi, my son could not tolerate goat milk kefir. I tried rice milk for kefiring but really did not like it. I found that Ecomil hazelnut milk makes quite palatable kefir: http://www.nutriops.com/ing/productos/ficha_producto.asp?FrmId=37 It contains corn maltodextrin but my son has no problem though he is corn free. Guest guest
Our goat's milk kefir usually takes around three days at room temperature, a little less in hot weather. I should wait at least that long with non-dairy kefirs. When it is ready you should be able to see lots of small bubbles forming and usually taste a " sharpness " in the kefir. Best wishes Tim > > > > > > Thank you very much indeed, Tim and Sandy for the information you > posted. > > I will be trying to do Rice Milk Kefir (it is naturally sweet) and > maybe Kefir apple juice ice lollies - I hope it works. > According to what I read I should expect to wait for longer than 24 > hours for fermentation if I do not use dairy, shouldn't I? > > Thank you very much. > > Vilma >
Guest guest
We've been very happy with the service we've had from Graig Farm for our liver and other organic meats. UK readers might like to try them out: www.graigfarm.co.uk Best wishes Tim > > >> > > HELLO EVERYONE> > > > > > I HAVE BEEN READING MORE AND MORE ABOUT KEFIR. Guest guest
Hi Vilma We are using coconut kefir, 3rd week, and slowly going up. He has been stimmy - flapping but he was before. I think it is helping. Just been on hols to North Yorkshire moors. He was great - ate out every day. Charlie had a green salad and sparkling water ( as well as stuff I took for him) and was very pleased about it - how many 6 year olds would think that was a treat! Sat with us in restaurant no probs, held hand no probs ( always an up and down area), playing football and just joining in like any kid. We saw relatives that we haven't seen for 3 years and they were gob smacked with the difference in him. I think the kefir has stopped us putting him on diflucan/flagyl again - we were just going round in circles with it. How do you know your son is allergic to coconut milk? We did a vega test years ago that said Charlie shouldn't have rice well since we had cut out everything else almost I didn't follow it. I think trial and erroe is the only option.
