Guest guest
Since vegans don't want to use ambergris, civet cat, or other animal sources for the funky base notes, I wonder if natto or stinky tofu would be a vegan substitute. I have had natto and it doesn't smell like sweaty socks like some have described. It was a lot more like a gas leak smell which I think is supposed to smell like decay. I have never had stinky tofu but the descriptions are hilarious! Some people say that it smells like diarrhea! So there is your vegan source of fecal notes! HAHA!! Although I hear the recipe includes shrimp heads so you would probably need to culture your own stinky tofu for a truly vegan product. I have had durian fruit which some people say smells like dead animals but I don't get that at all. To me, it is more of an intense tropical fruity aroma with a sulphurous raw onion pungency. I love the stuff but I won't be taking it with me to work anymore. Last time I did the janitor ran around the kitchen looking for the source of the gas leak! He was adamant that there was a gas leak until I let him sniff my durian. ammoniasmith
