Guest guest
Sherrie-- This is not a scientific answer, but I suffered from sciatica on and off for the last 10 years, with the worst of it after preganancy or inactivity. I finished a challenge in Nov., and when I saw your post I thought to myself, hmm, I have had no pain since I started the program. I haven't. I've lost a lot of fat, and now that I'm in relatively good shape, the pain is gone. I acted like an old woman in my earlier years, but I've found that vigorous exercise it the best medicine for what ails my body. I'm 44. May not work that way for everyone. : ) Best Regards, beth Help with Sciatica. Just starting my program. Hi! I've been in the group for awhile and have just watched the post mostly. I'm ready to start the program now, but, I suffer from sciatica very badly lately. I can't afford to go to the chiropractor right now, and have excruciating pain, especially after rising in the morning for several hours. I'm at the point now that the pain is constant all day and I can't hardly roll over in the bed at night to get more comfortable. I set a goal for myself a few years ago to look, feel and be better at 40 than I did at 20, but, it hasn't even began yet. Now, I feel like it's essential so that I can have a better quality of life and a longer one. It's not just about looking good anymore. I will be 40 on the 7th of Feb. and I never thought I would be in such bad shape. I used to be firm, muscular and very strong, but, over the past 10 or so years, I've lost it all. I'm about 90- lbs over weight and feel miserable with my shape and my health in general. I'm ready to do something about it, but, this sciatica seems to be an obstable right now. I can't even hardly stand for longer than 2-5 minutes at a time, and then when I sit it hurts, too. Is there any exercises that anyone can recommend for me that you know helps with sciatica? I have the total body gym which is nice because it inclines and puts less pressure on my back, I just haven't gotten into a regimen with it yet. Any other ideas of helping with the pain and strengthening myself would be very much appreciated. Take Care! Sherrie

Guest guest
Sherrie, Take frequent, slow short walks. Starting out at about 10 minutes and gradually progressing to lengths of 30 minutes or more. Before each walk, stretch. There are some good yoga stretches for sciatica, you can find them at http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/search_poses.cfm?TherapeuticApplications=S03 . Also the stretch pictured at the top of this web page http://www.moore-chiropractic.com/sciatica-stretches.html helps me when I am in pain. Like , once I started regular weight training and cardio I found that a lot of my discomfort went away. Hope this helps. --------- Help with Sciatica. Just starting my program. Hi! Guest guest
Hi Sherrie, I just typed in a long response, then lost it somehow You'll want to have a good MD check you out and get X-rays of course. Meanwhile, I would also HIGHLY recommend a $60 visit to a good accupuncturist. You'll know after just one visit if it is going to relieve the pain. For me, the pain went down 50% with just that first visit. After the third visit, it was gone for good. I just wish I had gotten in sooner. I was a cash payment. The whole process was much less painful than a blood draw. The " needles " an accupuncturist uses are more like hair width. I just closed my eyes and trusted the professional. There was a bit of massage involved too, and an herbal patch (like BenGay) to wear home. Before that,I honestly never considered accupuncture. My brother-in-law in the Seattle area had good luck with a back issue of his and suggested the accupuncture. I had tried the massage therapy, physical therapy prescribed exercises, chiropractic care through Kaiser Permanente, and even 5 traction sessions. The professionals weren't restricting my movements until the pain reduced, but my toes began to tingle. That is VERY serious. They told me the next phase would be bladder and bowel incontinence. That news got my attention Anyway, don't let the pain get you down. It will clear eventually. Meanwhile; Losing weight will help. Stick 2 pillows into one pillow case. Use that between your knees and lower legs as you sleep on your side. Sleep only on your sides. Use one pillow under your head. Find the Egoscue book and do as much as you can of his regimen. Walking can help. Swing your arms. Eat by the BFL plan. Try this stretch; Sit in a straight back chair. Cross your legs at the knee. Put the painful leg on top. Now, hold onto that upper knee and attempt to move it toward the opposite shoulder. Keep your back straight. Hold for 30 seconds, lower your leg, and repeat 5 times just on the one side. You want to feel the stretch at that center point of your buttocks, but not feel pain. Keep your spirits up and don't eat out of fear. The sciatica pain will clear. Happy New Year to the Ladies.
