7 years is definitely eons.

Well I'm here typing in Australia. I did my first challenge this time

last year and near the end I almost lost my Dad a few times. I looked

fabulous at the end! But I soon slipped into old habits etc and put on

around 20kg (44lbs)

I'm back into it as of New Year and plan on making this an Official

Challenge. All is going well and I am so focussed. (It does help that my

pants are a choking reminder)

A tonne of our Christmas food is still in the house but I boxed it all

up and put it in an unused room so we don't go eating it. You have to

get through a few boundaries first :-)

Who's With Us?

Just checking to see who's out there. Any oldtimers? Lurking newbies?

How

did the holidays go? Where are you now? What's the plan? Anybody

officially

entering the contest?

I've been around here for seven years, which is like an eon in internet

time. I threw out all of the holiday treats a few days ago. The pumpkin

bread, cookies and truffles went without incident, but I accidentally

ate

three huge bites of chocolate cake on my way to the trash can. Oops! LOL

I'm

starting the new year all germy and sick. I've missed a couple of

workouts

but I'm hoping to get back to the gym tomorrow. It's probably going to

be a

zoo with all the " resolutioners " running around.

I just ate breakfast - cottage cheese, fresh pineapple and crushed

macadamia

nuts sweetened with splenda. Now I'm debating between vegging in front

of

the computer or shuffling toward the television to watch the Oprah 20th

Anniversary Collection DVDs I got for Christmas. Love those things! See,

I

do watch something besides fighting. :-)

Anyway, what's up with you guys? How's it going today?

I guess I'm an old-timer. Started back in.... September

2005. Haven't been diligent since late summer; miss the exercise and

good food so I'm more on than off these days.

I'm finding that I'm much more interested in the food/exercise for

the purpose of my skin condition, and general well-being, and the

feel-good sense of doing what I say I'm going to do. Rather than any

interest in any numbers. I lost a total of about 50; not quite sure

where I am now, altho most of my smaller sizes are fitting. In other

words, I'm content with my size, but not content with being off from

the routines.

Dea that's absolutely Fabulous!

I believe a 16 here is a 14 in the USA and a 14 here a 12 there (etc.)

I am so excited for you because you have achieved so much!

Good luck for your second challenge!

Looks like I'm heading up that way at the end of Feb! Probably driving

Sydney - Gold Coast on the 21st or 22nd and driving back somewhere

between the 26th and the end of the month. I might stop in to harass

you for a BFL authorised meal :P

Re: Who's With Us?

Hi and everyone,

I hope you're feeling better soon .

Just wanted to let you guys know that I am still around and will

complete my first challenge in one week. :) I'm really proud of

myself for getting this far. I feel so much stronger physically and

mentally. I'm pretty happy with my results given that I wasn't as

strict over the last six weeks or so, feeling a bit tired, shin

splints troubles, trying to get through christmas, the holidays and

having a visitor staying with me at the moment.

Unfortunately, I didn't take my measurements at the beginning of the

program which I now regret, but I have lost 10kgs (22lbs), so far.

I'm happy with my loss although I think my results would have been

more dramatic had I ended the program with the same focus and vigour

that I had started it with. The best thing for me was being able to

pick myself back up when I fell off the wagon for a few days over

Christmas, whereas in the past I would have felt like a failure and

stopped completely. Sometimes, I have to pinch myself because I just

can't believe the things I am doing now, like jogging outdoors and

running up and down stairs (157 steps x 10 times) like I did

yesterday. I was amazed that I could have easily continued except

that it was dark and mosquito's were attacking me.

I'm not sure if US and Australian dress sizes are the same but I

went from a size 16 top to a 12 and a size 18 to 14 bottom.

I'm looking forward to seeing my grandma today for the first time in

six months as I'm now 76kgs (167lbs) as opposed to the last time she

saw me when I was 97kgs (213lbs).

I'm planning to start challenge 2 as soon as my first one has

finished. I'll try and be brave next week and post some pics as I

always found other people's before and after pics really motivating.

I just want to say thank you with all my heart to all the active

members here for supporting me during my challenge and for answering

all my questions etc. I wouldn't have gotten through this challenge

if it wasn't for the information and support I recieved here.

Wishing everyone continued success with your challenges.

All the best :)

I am a lurking newbie. I found the BFL website about a month ago but I haven't

done anything yet. I am such a procrastinator. I really need to get started and

I know having my pictures taken will be the best place to start. Tomorrow

morning, I will have my husband take the pictures. Tonight I am going to look

for the book online and buy it. Tomorrow I will dust off my weight machine and

treadmill and make a chart of what exercises to do on what days. I will go

shopping and get the right food tomorrow and I will start the challenge on

Friday. No more excuses!

Best luck to all!

Hi,

I'm here too. Been pretty much lurking on the list since I joined

mid-year. I am gearing up to start my challenge next week (my first one

last July only lasted 3 weeks). We head off for a week on a houseboat

tomorrow and have packed lots of good, healthy foods. Should be a good

easing into week. I've been eating so badly the last couple of months -

since October really - but have kept up the exercise so that's a

positive. It's so motivating and inspiring to see the list so active

again and I look forward to being more active when I return.

I don't know if I count as an old timer... maybe a midtimer...lol.

I've been around these boards for more than a year...probably going

on closer to two. The holidays were great....and yummy. But the

house has been cleared out and it's back to reality. I'm gearing up

to start the Afterburn program this coming Monday. I know, I know,

it's not BFL so what am I doing lurking... what can I say... I love

this group. I find it helpful to connect with other likeminded

ladies is search of a healthier lifestyle! And these boards have

helped me make it through 5 challenges!

Hi!

I just started lurking about a week ago, after starting a challenge on

December 18th. I started off well, but then Christmas came along and threw

me off track a bit. I considered re-starting the challenge, and then

realized all I needed to do was get myself back on track this week.

Since Monday was New Year's, I doubled up on Tuesday to include the cardio

and upper body, and then did just the lower body yesterday. I'm not

following the cardio plan exactly, as I'm doing longer runs on Saturdays (on

a treadmill). My goal is to run a 5K in the spring.

I'm 41, and a former smoker. When I quit 4 years ago (plus a couple of

months) I was dreadfully out of shape, but fairly thin. I didn't eat much,

and weight would come off fairly easily. Now, I've gained about 15 pounds

(I know, I know, it's nothing compared to some people) and the weight just

doesn't budge! Last year I was working out at the gym about 3 days a week,

and eating fairly well... and it took me about 6 months to lose 5 lbs (which

I gained back). So... I'm into my third week, and I've only lost a pound.

My muscles are building up quickly, but the weight just doesn't come off me

very easily.

I'm trying to eat 6 times a day, but it's more like 5. I don't eat much

junk food (just a few pieces of chocolate every now and then, and a cookie

every so often) and don't really drink soda or alcohol very often. I'm

trying to take my multivitamin again but it's like swallowing a horsepill.

Any advice?...

Cheers,

n 's sister, Etana, here:

11/21/06 I broke my right wrist, just entering day 2 of challenge 5. I

was unsuccessful with results in 4 previous challenges, maintaining my

weight for that year from 11/04 to 11/05, while watching my sister

lose 50 pounds. It was challenging, but I did see some things I do to

prevent success

1. my portions were too large

2. I cheat every day, but was not allowing " cheat " within my rules. It

was really difficult to wait for free day to have a piece of chocolate

3. I way overate on freeday, in relation to my 60 year body/metabolism

4. I would have good momentum, hit results that weren't exactly what I

wanted (reaching 161 when I wanted 159 by a certain date), and then

binge for a week

5. resented my exercise program

6. expect HIIT to be killer, and then not want to do it

7. micromanage the little details of what wasnt' working, writing on

fitday, in my journal, in an email to a friend, eat organic, avoid

corn, potatoes, rice, wheat because I had stomach ache/gas on right

belly... and was chronic constipated: then I got so fanatic in the

health issues that I resented it all

Currently, I totally binged on sugar for the past month, 2 days on

BFL, 4 days off. Felt sick and bloated every day I had sugar: like a

bloated free-day bad feeling of lethargy; gained 14 pounds in a month.

So easy to gain!

I began BFL-CH5 Tuesday; great day, then yesterday sugar again, felt

sick again. I am continuing today, not starting over. BFL-day 3, eat

clean portions and exercise. I am lifting a 1/2 pound weight 3 times a

day with my broken wrist: that's it for now for the weights, though I

think I will go down to the gym today and ask a fitness worker to help

me set a lower body routine that won't use my hands to position the

weights.

For now,

1. I will write and eat my portions,

2. read this BFL digest,

3. do Jazzercise 3 times a week and

4. HIIT at least once a week.

5. Not sure about weights until Dr. says so; I'll go to gym today.

Everything is slowed down with the broken wrist, even writing in my

journal; even carrying my journal to work with me is heavy.

But I hated how I felt eating the sugar the past month: I'd come home

and want to sleep; no energy, pants tight. Maintenance of 161 is

better than the upward gain and lethargy.

So for this week, I am aiming for getting back on BFL track every day,

and enjoying eating healthy food 5-6 times a day. Enjoying my

Jazzercise, instead of dreading my HIIT. Doing my wrist exercises

hourly. Reading this digest for inspiration!

Happy New Year to all!

Etana, I did my first challenge in '98 before the BFL book was written.

At that time EAS sent out a challenge guide when you registered.

It had suggestions on how to workout and eat that were a bit

different than the book so I have never actually done strict

BFL by the book. I got great results with a modified version.

If you cannot follow the program, then it is possible to make

some modifications and be successful. The original winners,

like Porter Freeman didn't have the book to go by either.

Some of the modifications I made were 1. I didn't have a free

day. Psychologically, that didn't work for me. I did wed.

nights margarita happy hour with the chips and all. Sat.

nights either pizza at home or a nice Italian dinner. The

whole free day and waiting just didn't work for me.

2. I worked out usually M,T, TH & F and got all my workouts

in with AM cardio some days the same day as weight

workouts. But I did get my 6 workouts in. I NEVER did

HIIT, but I was running 2 miles and not on the treadmill

which I think is hard to beat for burning fat.(hard on your

body too) Now I do HIIT because I enjoy it and hate running

for 20 or more minutes. Pick an activity that you " enjoy " so

you will not dread it.

I was never concerned with whole grains, I just ate

the proper portions and made sure to get enough protein.

I pay more attention to that now and try to make better

choices, but how critical is that to make my goals

at this point??

The program is simple, but we can make it as complicated

as we want and set ourselves up to fail if we worry about

every minute detail. Especially if we are the black/white

all or nothing thinkers (who? Me? ;-)

The important things are proper meals...content and portions.

Doing the workouts to your 10 (which may be less with a broken

wrist!) Being consistent and persistent. If you make a mistake,

get back up and keep going. Don't give up!!

That's my .02 but its probably not even worth that.

Hi Dianne! Welcome to the group. I was reading your post, and I just

wanted to remind you (and anyone else who hasn't read the book yet, or

may need a refresher), that the Body for Life book is in Libraries as

well. Sometimes people don't want to spend the money on the book, and

that shouldn't stop anyone. :) It can be rented from the Library,

and read in less than a day. Just a thought. :)

You have a great attitude! Start ASAP. The sooner you start BFL, the

sooner you will have the body you've always wanted! Good luck, and I

hope you find this group as helpful as I have. :)

Oooh, I hate swallowing vitamins too. Check out the Viactive multivitamin

chews. I'm sure they're not as good of quality as the really nice ones from

the health food store, but it certainly is better than taking nothing.

Another plus is that they come in a Chocolate-Cherry flavor so you can close

your eyes and pretend its a tootsie roll, lol.

Out of everything I just read in your post, the thing that stuck out to

me was your broken wrist. There is/was an ad campaign running here about

adult breaks and fractures and it's correspondence with Osteoporosis.

There is a high chance if you have a break or a fracture that you are

already suffering from Osteoporosis. Have a chat with your doctor about

this and add a good calcium supplement to your diet to assist not only

in the healing of your wrist but to avoid further injury or a humped

back in the future.

Take Care

Re: Who's With Us?

n 's sister, Etana, here:

Etana Finkler

long post, not EXACT BFL, but BFL food is the best lifestyle for me,

and hope my long post helps someone get back on track without being

perfect BFL!

Hi Skwigg et al,

Just catching up with emails -- going backwards through them...so here is a

long intro to get it over and done with. <grin>

WHO AM I: I'm , 5'7 " and weighed in at 202.5# this AM. I'm ~40% BF.

I'm on the " older side " of you young uns. Let's just say I'm over 50!

Maybe there are a few of you in my age bracket?

THE STORY WHERE I'VE BEEN: The BFL fist/palm concept was not for me when I

tried it back in 2003 -- my portions got out of control. Since I had had

past success with weighing and measuring foods to control portions, I fell

right in love with tracking calories online with the " Personal Food Analyst "

(PFA) nutrition program at physiquetransformation.com.

I was terrified to follow the PFA physique transformation plan (increase

calories to lose fat?!!) I think I subscribed three separate times over the

past four years. I only used it to track / check calories from time to

time. For times I wasn't using the PFA, a food diary done on paper and

" exchanges " of BFL foods worked just fine, eating six meals a day worked

fine, exercising BFL style worked fine -- until I (20/20) stalled my

metabolism -- I wasn't getting enough calories in -- a fixed 1800 at the

time and working out BFL style. I also didn't know about changing up your

routine to make your body react.

I did lose 50# -- I still weighed " 200 and none of your business pounds "

though. I maintained that loss for quite some time. Post-Katrina August

2005 - April 2006, I found my weight creeping slowly back upwards. I had

one of those revelations on a12 mile mountain hike in Big Bend NP -- I did

it but I could tell I had not been to the gym in a while.

I tried exchanges again, but from April - September, I lost a net total of 6

pounds (lost more, gained back, lost, gained).

WHERE I AM NOW: October 2006, I re-subscribed to the PFA and put the

program in " physique transformation mode " . I've not regretted it. I've

lost 19# in the past 13 weeks -- and most of that was lost while INCREASING

my calories from 1600 calories to 2800. It's amazing what your body let go

of when you feed it! I've been zig-zagging between 2000 and 2600 for a

month now. My husband has lost 30# since October as well and hasn't started

his zig-zag " fatburning phase " yet. His doctor has taken him off one of his

many diabetes medications as his blood sugar was bottoming out in the 50s at

times. We're both loving it!

Reviewing the BFL food list, I find that " what " I am eating, the vast

majority is in line with the food list -- although I don't eat a whole lot

of fruit. My carbs are coming from mostly veggie/rice/yam/beans. I'm

eating probably 6-8 meals a day depending on whether it's a " low calorie

day " or not. I feel like eating ALL the time! I'm drinking a tad over a

gallon of water a day.

GOALS: Aside from losing another 50# of fat or more by next December 2007,

I would like to get some more strength in my arms and legs. Despite all the

work I've done on machines, I have a lot of difficulty doing regular

bodyweight type squats and can't get in a single regular pushup (yet) --

going down is easy -- the up part still evades me on both. So, it's

bodyweight exercises for me per " Ms Sumptuous " . I am doing squat sets

without any weights just holding onto a rail for now. And, I am working my

way down to the floor from the wall and counter top. I do several other

exercises as well, but those two are the major changeups.

ENTER BFL? -- I'm not planning to do any type of BFL challenge officially.

I do take pics of me in a 2-piece on all four sides for a dose of reality

when the scale doesn't move as fast as I think it should. I do love the

progress they show. The PFA community has been very supportive and blogging

has been very satisfying. I just love the BFL-style workouts I get in. I

enjoy reading the inspirational stories in the BFL workout journal, and the

cookbook is great.

So Blessed!

I¹m here. My life has taken on a life of it¹s own and I¹m not sure if I¹m

invited yet or not. I lost my job the first week in October, sat on my ass

for three months, (actually spent nearly two hours a day working out) sold

my house, moved, decided to open a wine bar, got called back to work as a

temp with no benefits or car allowance or cell allowance or bonus, wrote a

business plan, got broadsided by a housewife on a cell phone and now I¹m

fixin¹ to unpack the house finally. It¹s been so out of hand here that my

mantra has been ³underwear, THEN pants². I missed about 10 days at the gym

from the time my house closed until the day after Christmas. Everyone

knows how unusual that is for me. Usually, I¹ll make the gym and fall face

first into the artichoke dip. This year, I didn¹t gain a pound since there

was no Christmas at my house. Three months of unemployment equals no

Christmas. My biggest sin was some Ferdandina¹s Fudge hand carried here

from Amelia Island. It made it through the first couple of nights and then

I was possessed by Satan and that was the end of that. (And chocolate isn¹t

my preferred sin)

Now the business plan is done, it¹s up to the landlord whether or not I get

the space. I¹m back unpacking the rest of the house. This place has three

fruit bearing citrus trees. I¹ve been pulling oranges off of the one tree

and making fresh orange juice every morning. I¹m around germy people all

day, but I don¹t have to stay where the germs are present so I hose off my

hands, add some Purel and move on to the next office. I also hope the fresh

oj helps. I expect this temp job to last probably three more weeks. I¹ve

interviewed with a great company, but the guy went limp when I told him my

salary requirement. I¹m like ³Dude! I took $50k off the top! If that

scares you, I¹m concerned about your salary structure². Of course, what I

really said was, ³You get what you pay for and you won¹t any better than

what¹s sitting here in your office right now. You have to decide what you

want to give up. Talent or cash². We¹ll see how that flies.

Best Christmas present hasn¹t been used yet, but it¹s a bright yellow Sugoi

cold weather cycling jacket and gloves. I¹m hoping to get back out

tomorrow, but it¹s been storming here. I haven¹t biked in three weeks. My

attorney brother insisted on bright yellow so whoever ran me over couldn¹t

say they didn¹t see me! So in spite of the fact that my life has been in a

Cuisinart for the last four months, all is good!

I'm sorry to hear things have been tough lately. Hopefully the new

year will be an upward trend for you. When I quit my last

job and spent about 6 months unemployed, that's when my

program totally fell apart and now I am fighting my way back.

So hang in there so you wont be kicking your self later...

believe me, it sucks.

And at least you haven't loosed your sense of humor. Your

style cracks me up!

Sorry for the late roll call -

I'm Amy - I have entered the challenge at least 10 times, never completing it

once. Sadly, I have been keeping up this routine since 2003. I turned 30 in

November and realized that I have spent half of my life hating my body, just

spinning my wheels so to speak. I AM entering the challenge again. I won't see

myself as a failure until I quit trying. Each challenge I did not complete

taught me something about myself, my strengths as well as my weaknesses. My

primary weakness is inconsistency. I do awesome for 4-6 weeks and then one free

day turns into a free month. I am tired of telling myself " this time is

different. " That's not enough for me anymore. All these different times have

added up to nothing more than disappointment in myself. I am tired of sitting

on the sidelines of my life, letting work, stress, whatever it is, interfere

with me accomplishing my dreams. Everyday, my life presents me with DreamMakers

and DreamKillers. Those donut holes -

DreamKillers. The alarm clock - DreamMaker. You get the idea. So, I want to

consistently choose what's going to get me there, not hold me back. That is my

goal for this challenge - because I know that if I can consistenly make good

choices, my DreamBody is not far away. Good luck to everyone and thanks for

the support!!

Amy

I'm new to this group, but not new to BFL. I've completed the

challenge once before about 5 years ago, but didn't really lose

weight. I took Free Day to mean chow from the moment I woke up to the

moment I went to bed, which then sometimes led to Free Days, plural.

Since then I have been yo-yoing away! My husband and I both started

our challenge on Monday, Jan. 1 (go figure!) I have high hopes for

this challenge! I have about 20 pounds to lose. My pattern is like

many that I have read in this group--I lose weight, people start to

make comments, I freak because I'm actually doing it and the weight

comes right back on. However, I am determined not to freak this

time! I have such a crystal clear vision of where I want to go and am

taking the right steps to get me there. I'm so excited!

Nothing like changes to help spur us on to making changes.

That's why I am trying to get my Canadian buddy to get started with this

program with me...while she is taking

her husband to court, etc....

When we were young and beautiful, she and I would get fit at the craziest

times. I guess it is a control thing.

I feel more in control when I am taking charge of my physical person.

Perhaps, that doesn't say much about my spiritual life, but really the same

goes there, too. The crazier things are

around me, the more prayerful I can become in order to weather the storm.

The physical realm teaches us about the spiritual. I think Mr.

would agree.

Re: Who's With Us?

(And chocolate

isn¹t

my preferred sin)

Now the business plan is done, it¹s up to the landlord whether or not I

get

I also hope the

fresh

Best Christmas present hasn¹t been used yet, but it¹s a bright yellow

Sugoi

cold weather cycling jacket and gloves.

Hi, I'm Beth a long time lurker :). I'm doing an official 12 week

challenge and also the 10 week body for lifers cruise challenge. I'm

48 until April, have done 2 bfl challenges over the last 4 years. I

was a major slacker all of last year and want to get back to my best

body!
