I suspect my five year old son has yeast overgrowth. For any of you whose children did have this condition, how did you know, what were the symptoms, what specialists treated it and how did they treat it?Our kiddo exhibits signs of ADHD, he's only in kindergarten and he served his first after school detention today for talking back, refusing to do work, etc. He's hyper and he doesn't mind well at all at home. He also flaps his hands, wants to be naked all of the time and he does a certain pelvic stemming that has been called masturbation by his doctors. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Melony you are wise to treat this set of symptoms before it manifests into more.

Flapping hands, hyperactivity, itching/stimulation can be signs of yeast. I

suggest you starting at a gfcfsoyfree diet as a starting point. Where do you

live? You can find a DAN to begin treatments. A 5 yr old shouldn't be in

detention. He's doing the best he can and while being treated needs to be in a

setting where he is valued. You might consider a Montessori setting where he

can work at his pace of development and won't have to follow the herd.

We use probiotic foods, nystatin, and biocidin to address fungal issues. Along

with having a diet that doesn't feed the issue.

If you are in the Houston area you might like Dr Volpe or Dr Pothuluri.

Yeast issues can manifest themselves in many ways. What you describe can be one

of them. If your child has taken some antibiotics, yeast has to be considered

as a culprit.

A good DAN doctor will do the OAT test and look for yeast and leaky gut markers.

Treating yeast can come in prescription form, things like Nystatin, and

Diflucan, or some over the counter products like Capryllic Acid, Oil of Oregano,

Grapefruit Seed Extract. Diet is also an important consideration. I think the

Feingold diet is great for hyperactivity and yeast, also a low sugar, low carb

diet is also essential in controlling yeast.

'The Yeast Connection' is a good book to read:

Food allergies can also contribute to hyperactivity and behaviors, getting your

child tested (for IgE and IgG allergies) and avoiding these foods can be very

helpful.

A great book is " Feast without Yeast. " I ditto the points below but make sure

you are not giving a lot of sugar and carbs that are GFCF (a mistake we made

early on!). Yeast thrives on sugar and acidic environment and a probiotic can

help with dysbiosis. We all have some yeast in our gut, but in our children

yeast overgrowth can occur because of their gut not having a healthy amount of

'good' bacteria. Dr. discusses this in the episode on pathogens:

physician-partnership-healing-our-children

Also, Dr. Devin Houston has some great free webinars and you can sign up for

them on www.houstonenzymes.com. He covers Candida as well.

As far as lab testing, you can do a stool culture to look for yeast overgrowth.

However, if you talk to parents who have been dealing w/ yeat for awhile in

their kids they will tell you they can see yeast 'flares' from symptoms.

There are natural antifungals you can use (mentioned in the book above) but for

more serious infections you may need a prescription such as Diflucan/Nystatin.

Candida can become resistant to both natural/herbal antifungals and prescription

antifungals.

I would find a good biomedical doctor who has experience with this as mentioned.

Dr. is in Austin and Dallas.

Best,
