Hi I'm , and have joined the forum and have been reading posts without

commenting for a couple of weeks now. Reason for joining is that I have a 10

year old with speech and language disorder, who is just about to start special

school next term.

Her diagnosis doesn't take her onto the autistic spectrum because she is totally

empathetic, but the neurological discussions on this site are ringing bells for

me.

Gaelle's speech did not develop at all until she was about 2 and a half, by

which time she was in speech therapy. Her academic learning is delayed, by about

2 years on average, so she's been working with the 7/8 year olds in her last

school. She looks like an eight year old in dentition and size, and her

development seems to be about falling in and out of friendships very fast right

now.

She has bladder reflux currently controlled by medication (Oxybutinin), as the

operation at 6yrs to help the valves to close was not successful. Her kidneys

look like they have chicken pox when seen with isotope scanning in the nuclear

medicine department. This damage is likely to be from repeated bladder

infections, although she hardly ever complains of cystitis like symptoms. She's

not always continent, wee nor pooh, especially when it's damp, so through the

autumn again this year.

We have found a kineseiologist in Worthing who's hot on supplements, and has

worked with Gaelle through the primitive reflexes, and sorts out food

intolerances. He's very clear about the neurological activity of MSG and

aspartamine or any other artificial sweeteners, and can check body imbalances

between the LHS and RHS.

I am currently grieving for Gaelle's transition from main stream to special

school, but circumstances have brought it about, and I am waiting for the next

part of the action...

I suspect that we are on the right track with healing mechanisms for Gaelle and

will be reading and learning more from you all, as our experiences together are

our strength.

By the way, one natural form of MSG is seaweed, but I always thought the Chinese

restaurant syndrome was due to artificial MSG which is chemically made and so

has both left and right handed molecules, rather than the natural one which is

just left handed!

Dear

Welcome to the group. I think each of us has had a time of grieving for the gap between where are children are currently functioning and where they might have been. I think in an normal environment where little hope is offered rather low expectations, we are often worn down by the helplessness of not knowing what to do. This is the greatest enrichment that a group like this offers... We each share a common aim to improve the lives of our babes, and have a common belief that more can be done and sharing our personal real life experiences helps many. It is a richer source than all the medical resources can offer because our experiences are a true reflection of our observations without being forced into meeting any secondary gain.

For me the biggest gains have not come from a specific school, rather in the environment in which our children have felt most valued and the school have openly wanted to do most.  Sometimes a higher achiever in a lower skillset environment ignites a passion in a teacher to want to do even more with that child.. as they are a gift that rarely comes their way.

My NT middle son was failed by private schooling and then went state school with a teacher who could see so much untapped potential... With her belief in his gifts and talents.. he caught up 2.5 years in 2 terms and left as a high achiever all it took was one teacher who connected with him.

Best Wishes

Tracey
