Guest guest
I know that immunizations are a touchy subject for some. But I have a question that I'd like some input on. My daughter (5) has had all her immunizations so far, although some of them were given a little later than recommended due to illness and her seizures. I didn't really start thinking that an ASD was possible in her till this past year when we really started to doubt that medications given as a baby were still causing her delays and behaviors. (As we had been told for some time could be the likely culprit and since she did have some language no one would say Autism) Anyway we still don't have an official diagnosis but it is nearing back to school time here and she will be entering Kindergarten. At our last dr. visit (for an infection) they said that she was due for one shot before the start of K in a few weeks. The MMR. She had this combined type shot back on 8-1-05 and I don't recall specifically any real regression with it, but again, at that time we were under the impression that all of her delays or regressions were from the previous medications so I don't think I would have been trying to track any changes in her then anyway. Is the MMR vaccine considered to be a safe vaccination? I did ask for the dr.'s office to send me a copy of the vaccine insert, but I've NO CLUE what I should be looking for as far as red flags on peservatives or additives etc. Don't even know if it's necessary for me to be concerned about it at all or should I be asking for some accomodation for her to start K without it? Thanks for the input! Theresa 's mom
Guest guest
You can have her blood tested for titers if you think it is important, or you can just request an exemption.? Most children who have? seizures can always be exempt.......I know of several who are.. MMR Vaccine question I know that immunizations are a touchy subject for some. Guest guest
Can you get an MMR titer blood test? It will show whether or not your daughter is immune to measles, mumps, and ruebella. The only reason they give the MMR booster is because some children did not develop immunity with the initial vaccine. My daughter had the MMR titer and was found to be immune so she does not need the booster. I just had to send the school nurse a copy of the results of the blood test to include in her file. Guest guest
> > Is the MMR vaccine considered to be a safe vaccination? No, it's not safe, necessary or even effective. Many of the kids in these recent mumps and measles outbreaks were fully vaccinated. So many kids have regressed into autism just from this very vaccine. I would never give a child suspected of being on the spectrum the MMR. Even if that shot were " clean " of preservatives and toxins, the live viruses can be a trigger for many children. Guest guest
From the package insert: http://www.fda.gov/cber/label/mmriiLB.pdf M-M-R II is a sterile lyophilized preparation of (1) ATTENUVAX* (Measles Virus Vaccine Live), a more attenuated line of measles virus, derived from Enders' attenuated Edmonston strain and propagated in chick embryo cell culture; (2) MUMPSVAX* (Mumps Virus Vaccine Live), the Jeryl Lynn** (B level) strain of mumps virus propagated in chick embryo cell culture; and (3) MERUVAX* II (Rubella Virus Vaccine Live), the Wistar RA 27/3 strain of live attenuated rubella virus propagated in WI-38 human diploid lung fibroblasts.1,2 The growth medium for measles and mumps is Medium 199 (a buffered salt solution containing vitamins and amino acids and supplemented with fetal bovine serum) containing SPGA (sucrose, phosphate, glutamate, and recombinant human albumin) as stabilizer and neomycin. The growth medium for rubella is Minimum Essential Medium (MEM) [a buffered salt solution containing vitamins and amino acids and supplemented with fetal bovine serum] containing recombinant human albumin and neomycin. Sorbitol and hydrolyzed gelatin stabilizer are added to the individual virus harvests... WARNINGS Due caution should be employed in administration of M-M-R II to persons with a history of cerebral injury, individual or family histories of convulsions, or any other condition in which stress due to fever should be avoided. The physician should be alert to the temperature elevation which may occur following vaccination (see ADVERSE REACTIONS). Hypersensitivity to Eggs Live measles vaccine and live mumps vaccine are produced in chick embryo cell culture. Persons with a history of anaphylactic, anaphylactoid, or other immediate reactions (e.g., hives, swelling of the mouth and throat, difficulty breathing, hypotension, or shock) subsequent to egg ingestion may be at an enhanced risk of immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions after receiving vaccines containing traces of chick embryo antigen. The potential risk to benefit ratio should be carefully evaluated before considering vaccination in such cases. Such individuals may be vaccinated with extreme caution, having adequate treatment on hand should a reaction occur (see PRECAUTIONS).45 However, the AAP has stated, " Most children with a history of anaphylactic reactions to eggs have no untoward reactions to measles or MMR vaccine. Persons are not at increased risk if they have egg allergies that are not anaphylactic, and they should be vaccinated in the usual manner. In addition, skin testing of egg-allergic children with vaccine has not been predictive of which children will have an immediate hypersensitivity reaction...Persons with allergies to chickens or chicken feathers are not at increased risk of reaction to the vaccine. " 44 Hypersensitivity to Neomycin The AAP states, " Persons who have experienced anaphylactic reactions to topically or systemically administered neomycin should not receive measles vaccine. Most often, however, neomycin allergy manifests as a contact dermatitis, which is a delayed-type (cell-mediated) immune response rather than M-M-R® II (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella Virus Vaccine Live) 9739304 5 anaphylaxis. In such persons, an adverse reaction to neomycin in the vaccine would be an erythematous, pruritic nodule or papule, 48 to 96 hours after vaccination. A history of contact dermatitis to neomycin is not a contraindication to receiving measles vaccine. " 44 Thrombocytopenia Individuals with current thrombocytopenia may develop more severe thrombocytopenia following vaccination. In addition, individuals who experienced thrombocytopenia with the first dose of M-M-R II (or its component vaccines) may develop thrombocytopenia with repeat doses. Serologic status may be evaluated to determine whether or not additional doses of vaccine are needed. The potential risk to benefit ratio should be carefully evaluated before considering vaccination in such cases (see ADVERSE REACTIONS). > > I know that immunizations are a touchy subject for some. Guest guest
BE CAREFUL! This is the SAME vaccine that sent my 5 year old daughter over the edge! Literally at the age of 5 she was delayed, but after this vaccine she WAS NEVER the same. Recently she got her titers tested and she is WAY BEYOND what is considered immune. A friend of mine who lives in a " medical ONLY exemption " state had her son's tested and his was high too, and the doctor admited that she has NEVER had a kid who she tested that needed the booster- and the recommendation is based on the health of the " general " public, not the individual health! You are right on to be concerned vaccinating, and congrats for seeking answers BEFORE you do it! Jackie > > I know that immunizations are a touchy subject for some. Guest guest
I have read multiple accounts of people saying their child was a little " off " but developed full autism after the five yr-old boosters. I wonder just how common it is. Also, those with NT kids who suddenly develop ADHD in kindergarten, who didn't have any problems in daycare. Just makes me wonder... Guest guest
Well I have decided that when we go in I will be asking the dr. to do a medical exempt form for her. There is just too much risk here and she has had one already, so I'm betting she does have the immunity she needs anyway... or at least as much as possible from a vaccine. This will be one time that her seizures come in handy! She has only ever had two fevers in her life that didn't give her seizures and the worse the fever, the worse the seizure! She already has ADHD, so I don't need those symptoms becomming worse either, and she is quite delayed in several areas. If she isn't already considered as having Autism, I don't want an unneeded vaccine to be the cause of her getting a full blown case. Thanks so much for everyone's input! I definately appriciate it. BTW, I had also already decided that I was not giving my older daughter (11) the Guardasil. It didn't help that our family doctor is a supporter of it and actually has a newspaper clipping where he talks about the benefits of it hanging up in the one exam room. I didn't even realize this untill the next visit and though, DUH! That's why he was telling me that it would be good for her to do in the next couple years! I just think that we'll be better off without it and I talk to her often about the things that can happen when having sex, and that it's not just about the risk of having a baby. I remember the first time I told her all the stuff that can happen from having sex and she looked at me and said " then why do people do it at all? " LMAO! Thanks again everyone!
Guest guest
This is what happened with our son. Prior to boosters, I was able to have him write and focus, however after, we had trouble (writing is still an issue) and he was unofficially dx'd with add in just before kindergarten and later his aspergers became more evident. So do I suspect...yes....i didn't even know what aspergers was and I barely knew about autism as his sister had recently been dx'd. Yea, I wish I had started him in preschool much sooner, wrote down more things, but things are just the way they are. I chose not to get the boosters for his sister until I knew more. I wish I had the money or insurance to get the titers ran so I knew officially where we stood. I keep thinking, if there is an epidemic of something in our area, then depending on what it is, I'd go get that shot so she wouldn't miss school or therapy, but I am afraid I'd be told she'd have to catch up or not at all. Then, I thought, gee, if it made her regress, that would show 'em, however, our family would be left with any fallout. She did have the chickenpox vax and later she still had a full-blown case of chickenpox. Guest guest
MMR can cause a lot of GI problems. My daughter was scoped by Dr. Krigsman in 02 and her tissue samples were used in research due to colitis, entercolitis and possibly measles in the gut. If your going to do that vaccine, make sure it's separated into single inoculations and not do the 3 in 1 jab.
