Guest guest
Oh, yikes! I would be concerned about that. I would call them back and explain that he is in serious pain. Poor thing!! Noelle (12-2-01) Ian (8-15-04) Diaper change hurts Hi everyone, Just wondering if you have ever had this problem. We are in our 6th cast and have never experienced this. When I go to tuck the diaper in and up the cast cries. It says it hurts. And is telling me he is sorry the whole time. So sad I noticed it a few days ago. Did contact his doctor and he didn't feel there was a need to change anything. I wasn't happy. Tonight was really bad. When I went to tuck it up in the back he screamed. It does feel different than any of the other cast. He will only have this cast on 6 weeks.... would it be way to early to try to flare it? Also around his hips it hurts him. And his hip bones are not completely covered by the cast when he is laying down. To say the least I am hurting for . I don't know what else to do other than insists they make some changes. Any thoughts? Thanks, Tasha Tasha Mommy of twin boys- and 27mths Fort Worth, Texas --------------------------------- Looking for a deal? Find great prices on flights and hotels with Yahoo! FareChase. Guest guest
Tasha, We had this happen one time. Same thing, every time I stuck mu hand up the cast to tuck in the diaper he would cry or grimace. Well, come to find out, when he got the cast off at the end of the two months, he had a skin infection that was a ring all the around his body and an inch thick that was most likely caused by moisture. Maybe from pee or who knows, from the sponge bathes??? We ended up needing to leave the cast off for a week until his skin heeled and putting special cream on it. Not trying to make you nervous, just wanted to share our experience with you. /Cole Tasha Fontenot wrote: Hi everyone, Just wondering if you have ever had this problem. Guest guest
We had this very same situation with Madison once when her cast was on. I ended up taking a tongue depressor and wrapping it in stick free gauze and stuck it up her cast where she was complaining. When I pulled it out there was blood on the gauze. I called SLC and they told me to take her to an emergency room immediately to be treated for possible skin break down. Is he running a fever by any chance? This would of course tell you there is an infection. When I took her tot he ER they trimmed her cast at the tummy hole and removed the undershirt. She was given antibiotics and referred to a wound care clinic the following morning. This clinic specialized in diabetic wound care and was very helpful. They gave us a cleanser and two ointments to apply to the area. She did have skin breakdown that was determined to be a chemical burn from urine. She was much better once the treatment started and was completely healed the following week when we went to SLC to have her cast changed. On your other post about bracing too soon....there use to be a couple of people on the group, that aren't any longer. Their children's casts were removed and went into braces before getting the optimum numbers that are now pushed for. A lesson learned from these past cases. It is imperative that the casting not be discontinued until the RVAD is 0, the rotation is completely corrected, and the COBB angle(s) are below 10. I would hate for to lose all of the correction he has already achieved by going to a brace too soon. I would (and did) insist on continued casting until these results are achieved. I literally had to beg Dr. D to apply one more cast to M. He finally gave in because I was so insist ant. Call me if you want to chat or get together and I can share some of her x-rays with you. Maybe we could set up a play date for the kids or something. I wish all of you the very best. Take care and keep up all of the great work you're doing Mom! Guest guest
We had the same thing happen several times as well, urine had gotten trapped and he had a horrible skin infection, and they also gave us oral antibiotics and some ointment to clear it up. He was able to keep his cast on b/c I caught it early... I " d take him to your pediatrician first and go w/your instinct. You'd rather have the cast cut off than a serious skin infection or other issues you can't see.. Good luck... It's hard sometimes, but well worth it in the end =) and Evan Tasha Fontenot wrote: Hi everyone, Just wondering if you have ever had this problem. Guest guest
Hi Tasha, Here's a suggestion: Perhaps you can change 's diaper with himnstanding up. Obviously a poopy diaper, he'll have to lay down, but then he's not on the floor being changed so frequently. Perhaps trying pull-ups or something maybe easier to use. Just a thought. It's not an answer to the problem, but perhaps a way to make more comfortable. Guest guest
Thanks Aekta.................I don't know if I could do that........at least not in the front. I have always had him stand up to tuck the diaper up the back of the his cast. He freaks out when I do this. I just don't get it. All I can come up with is the cast is really tight all the way around the bottom. I can hardly get my fingers in the front or back to tuck the diaper up and in. His past 5 casts were nothing like this. I guess as long as he is in pain ONLY when I change his diaper he will eventually get use to it. I hope! I'll keep you posted.
