Reminder about FO usage

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to send in a reminder about safe use of Fragrance Oils. (FO's)

Please remember not to stick the FO's right under your nose. This does cause

problem within the sinus membranes because of the synthetics that are used to

make the aromas and will cause a loss of smell whether one notices it or now.

It also will cause problems with sensitivities to many different aromas and make

the body sick, even if it is not really noticed by the person. This comes from

my first encounter several years ago to using full strength FO’s in soaps and

sundries and not knowing that sticking my head in the pot to see if the aroma is

strong enough, was going to make me … first loose some of my since of smell…

second become sensitive to many different kinds of aroma … third to become

sick from time to time because of even light exposure to aromas of many kinds.

The only scenting oils that do not make me sick are Essential Oils and that is

because they do not have any synthetic chemicals in them that cause these type

of problems.

Yes, I do still work with FO's, but now have to be very careful when doing so

when they are added to soap, especially if the soap is hot, like in a Hand

Milled or HP soap.

This came up again for me when someone asked me why they were feeling so heady

lately when they make their soaps. When I asked how they process their soap when

scenting them, they told me they did the sticking the head in the pot or bowl

thingy, to see how strong it is. This method does not tell us if it is strong

enough, even when making a Lotion, Cream, etc. But it does cause ill effects to

the body. It may take a short time or a long time and might not be a strong

problem, but it is a problem and is there. So be careful and do make a note to

use them in a area where the halo of synthetic fragrances can be either taken

out of the room or spread out and not concentrated in the area you are in. Try

to pull fresh air in when you are making a lot of your products or bottling your

oils for sale.

Hi, Rita! Thanks SO much for sharing that reminder!! I, too, no longer have

the ability to smell the way I used to. I have also developed sensitivities

to certain FOs that I use frequently. I think a lot of us don't regard FOs

with the respect and care we should. Thanks for reminding us that we need

to! :)
