Guest guest
Ah, Jeanine - Part of it comes from what we want back from folks we are attempting to teach. The #2 definition I've got in Webster's is " dupe. " Well, I'm no dupe anymore, and daily you work tirelessly to educate yourself and those around you about the severity of the problems that to date are invisible to most others. What is it we want: do we want to educate so others can work with us and advance understanding of prevention and healing or do we want pity? In my experience, it still takes a buck along with pity to get a cuppa joe - To my mind, you're been seriously victimized but you aren't a victim, and if we're not all there yet ourselves, that's the goal in order to really start finding what will work for us for healing. I've been working on health and disability issues for decades prior to bumping into the catastophe of mold - the way we define ourselves has a GREAT deal to do with how others will see us and feel about us. To claim victimhood is generally not effective in getting support from others - they may throw enough money at it to assuage their guilt, but they won't often engage in supporting us toward wholescale understanding, prevention, remediation and healing. ~Haley who <jeaninem660@...> wrote: " letitia0514 " THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WHAT YOU ARE DOING! I think 'victims " is a fine word, it's your deal, you do it the way you want. just the fact that your ill and trying to do what you can to help other victims is great. and yes, we are all victims, that doesn't mean we are not fighters. some are more ill than others.and if their family is amoung the non- believers than they have even more right to fell like a victim. this is a most horrible deal to go through and it may be easy for some who are not as ill to forget or not understand how ill others may truely be. not all of us can afford to get any medical help or cannot find it even if we could afford it. we all do what we can even if that just means only being able to try to help ourselfs some how. some dont have enough energy to even do that. theres times I fell so bad i consider righting a plee post just begging for someone to help me get through this, but my pride stops me from doing so. some have and my heart goes out to them because I know the place that they are in. all I can do is say a prayer for them to get some help. everyone that goes through this starts out as a victim, some get better, some dont. I think we all need to keep this in our minds. we are victims and many of us need help, if we are unlaibled as victims, what does that really say to the public? is it not bad enough that those who do not understand just how this can devastate your life may not see us as victims? > > Hello all: > > i have been reading the e-mails and a lot has been said about the > word " victims " , which is the name that I called the conference > calls, which can be CHANGED. Guest guest
Hey Jeanine- About 'wanting attention' - when I have enough strength, I do counseling with health patients, and I have a very high tolerance for people feeling all kinds of frustration while they're coming to terms with limitations and pain and figuring out how to live with them. It's a natural stage of contending with ignorance and intolerance of people who don't understand what it is to go through the struggle. But most people get past that stage to a place where they are able to take steps to find at least SOME doctors and friends who understand and can help us make the best of the challenge. Our best isn't always good enough - I've been there and done that, as most of us have. Yes, there IS a difference between pity and compassion, and no, I don't think anyone wants pity - it rarely gets one what they need - someone who pities can only listen for so long before their eyes glaze over. They are likely to tell you to think about how things are going to get better without helping you visualize how to get from here to there. Someone who has compassion about your situation is going to listen better and and answer thoughtfully, and will hold your hand when you lose your grip, as all of us may. BTW: cancer 'survivers' are not necessarily cancer-free... they're simply folks who have made it across an obstacle course to where they are, and generally there are no promises. Some are cancer free, some in remission, some just not actively dying at a clip, and there are many variations in between. So, perhaps we don't understand the plight of cancer patients the way others misunderstand our experience? I came to the mold 'game,' if you will, after a number of other stuff, much of which I have under control and livable but could become life-threatening at the drop of a hat... I'm still trying to get to the bottom of my mold stuff, but having watched my neighbor deteriorate and DIE from his exposure has me understanding just how serious it is. I've been working hand in glove with his mother to address the neglect that happened and learning more about my own situation as I go along. I TRULY understand about people who struggle when their doctors and family and friends don't have the first clue as to what they are struggling with... actually, I lost my closest friend at work after complications with one of my early open heart surgeries - it blew here mind to get to know someone her own age nearly die in surgery and then have the kinds of troubles I did subsequently. Big deal, perhaps, but then my marriage fell apart when my ex husband wasn't able to communicate with me after my miscarriage the following year and an emergency redo on the valve surgery, this time after being in congestive heart failure and v-fib, very messy stuff - He didn't know how to communicate with me. You question about MY health comes across as a bit personal - I'm not looking to get competitive with everyone - we each have our own challenges or we wouldn't have sought out other folks to see what they've learned. My exposure very nearly killed me two years ago when it contributed to my bleeding-out after a *minor* surgery - they split me down the middle and pumped 3 liters of blood out of my abdomen so I could heal. My exposure also triggered progression of a previously unknown congenital kidney disease. My renal function is now under 50% - as you may know, one doesn't get on the transplant list until the low 20s or start dialysis until about 12, neither of which I'm likely to survive given my history of complications and trouble with bloodthinners because of my artificial heart valve. While I have a lot of kidney now, my function did plummet over 10 percentage points in the last six months, which I find very spooky. My peripheral neuropathy and positional hypotension (which typically runs 85/55) are pretty minor compared to the dizzy spells and exhertion fatigue in terms of daily challenges. My situation may not be what yours is, but I've been round the block. We each have our wn experiences... ~Haley --- who <jeaninem660@...> wrote: > Haley, > does the word " victim " mean that that person is > asking you to pity > them or does it mean that they have been hurt > and need help. > I personally dont think there is such a thing > as pity, you either > care or you dont, what you think is someone > wanting pity may just be > someone wanting help and getting aggervated > because they cant get > any. theres also a big difference in someone > looking for pity > " attention " and someone going through a hard > time and just needing > someone to listin while they vent for what ever > is bothering them. > does mold suviver give the impression like > canser suviver(meaning all > better now)? do you know if your all better now > or is there a very > good possability that you will keep the illness > that mold has givin > you. > > > > > Ah, Jeanine - > > > > Part of it comes from what we want back > from folks we are > attempting to teach. Guest guest
EXACTLY my point. ;-) Pity does not = help. Yes! I actually think the Katrina folks will end up telling their grandchildren that they are Katrina survivors, but you would have guessed that I think so... ;-) Yeah, it's good when folks feel strong enough that they can reach out and help others. ;-) ~Haley who <jeaninem660@...> wrote: Haley, I didn't know I made reference to your health, I was thinking about Katrina victims as they are called, and they got a lot of " pity " but many still wait for help. I was thinking about someone older on this board that may be to ill to help herself and really needs help. I was thinking about some here that are just to ill to maybe offer Letita help even though they would like to, and some that may not even have enough energy to post. and yes, we have to take care of ourself first and if, along the way we can do something to help others it's great. what you are doing is great, it all gets us a step closer. we all just do what we can, some have the means to do more than others, some are still victims. maybe if the only ones that fell up to helping Letita dont consider their self a victim it should be changed, but isn't the whole purpose to help the victims? or is it something else. Im a victim of mold, and I've never been a weak minded person,I have worked right along with men my whole life, and raised my childen alone. I am known to be so strong minded that my family assumes that I can get through anything and I usually do. Im so bullhead and set in my ways that I dont want a man in my life if it means i have to give up anything of who i am. even if one came around that didn't stink, lol's. I am angery and fusterated at haveing this exposure at the hands of others evilways, its compounded by the lack of understanding, lack of proper medical help, lack of knowledge by science. there are some sicker than me, there are some not as sick. thats not the point. the only point I was trying to make is that we are all victims of mold and we allways will be, no matter how we adjust. Katrina victims will always be Katrina victims, when they tell their grandchildren their storys, wont they say'I was a Katrina victim'? than they will tell them how they overcame the strugle. dont you think theres a difference in how the public precieves the word 'victim' and how the victim precieves it? have I rolled over and let it take me, no, neither have you, but we still are mold victims. > > Hey Jeanine- > > About 'wanting attention' - when I have enough > strength, I do counseling with health patients, > and I have a very high tolerance for people > feeling all kinds of frustration while they're > coming to terms with limitations and pain and > figuring out how to live with them.
