,

Thank you for your info here as well. Obviously, there is a lot more to

these moisture meters than I had thought. Do you and or Carl even think it is

feasible for me to attempt to use one? In the meantime I will continue to

read up on what I can on this subject. I really appreciate the help from both

you and Carl on this.

I have used several different types of meters to measure moisture content

and the Tramex encounter is the best. It's only drawbacks are that it can't

get into a space less than about four inches or take readings on surfaces

that are flat for about that width by about six inches.

Moisture meters are tricky to use. They measure conductivity so concealed

metal (like a drywall corner bead) or dissolved salt (from the ocean or

urine)can make surfaces appear wet when they are dry.

The moisture content of surfaces also varies with relative humidity (RH) so

wood that is " dry " might appear damp in high humidity. (A very rough rule of

thumb for wood: divide the RH by 5 to get the approximate expected moisture

content.) For drywall, you must compare different surfaces: known dry with

suspected wet.

It takes a fair amount of practice to use moisture meters correctly.

third one (Tramex) is an analog meter. These three are in the $295- $349

range. How a meter needs to be held (in direct contact?), " aimed " and

oriented when used, may limit its use in tight corners...

Does anyone have experience with these, or similar moisture meters?
